Ran out of gas today.

Well guys I did it, my car that is a week old has run out of gas. Because of hurricane Sandy and the ridiculously long gas lines my car is done and on the side of the road. I did manage to get a canister of regular fuel though (turns out that's all they had), would it be safe to put a gallon of regular in to make it home or to just wait a week until premium starts to flow in and leave my car on the side of a gas station?

And also the meter does not lie! When the miles left hit 0, it gave me 5 minutes and it was out.

Your car has an advanced knock detection system. It is fine to drive it on 87 just to get it home, avoid WOT, RPMs over 3k, and luckily it's not too hot.

Sorry man that sucks. Well at least you know the meter is spot on.Thats a tough call. Some cars will run just fine with a lower grade fuel, but if you try it and it starts knocking really bad ,I'd shut it off, if it doesn't turn itself off, till you can get the correct fuel in there. You'll probably be fine though, to just get the car home

this hurricane has seriously sucked...the lines in CT are absurd, I can't even imagine the lines in NY/NYC/LI/Burroughs...

Be safe and hang in there...

Sorry to hear you are having to deal with all of the issues in the North East. I have friends and family out there so I have heard all the stories.

I know we arent suposed to use regular fuel in our cars but in this extreme case I dont see how it could be that damaging to your car. I would just suggest driving very gingerly with the regular and not pushing it very hard. From what I understand you are just trying to get it home so I do see you racing in home. If possible try to find some octane booster maybe to bring up the octane level to keep from running the 87 octane. Just some thoughts.

Hope you and your family are doing well. Best of luck.

Not a big deal unless it becomes a habit.

Wont do any harm, if its a diesel then good luck getting it started back up gotta prime the lines and remove the air. Put 87 octane and not worry about it, the car will retard the timing i would avoid wot and thats about it.

Not a big deal, we had an issue here with an oil refinery distributing only regular fuel to gas stations. At the time, I had a 335, and verified with BMW Canada and they said that there was no issue.

The lines are crazy over here in bklyn for gas! The gas station around the comer of my house has a line that stretches 6 blocks! And there is no gas...

By the time I drive to Philly and back I'll need to fill up again.. Lol...

A friend of mine drove to CT to get gas today!

Had to make an emergency run today and ran out of gas as expected on the way back too. Had to push to park. Empty tank gave me about 9 miles to go, that's lot less than empty tank on E92.

So when the gas light turns on how many miles have you guys driven before you run out. I push my luck at times with my other cars have driven 10 miles when my tundra said it was zero to empty.

Damn that sucks. Im sorry. You will be fine with 87 dont drive too spirited or wild. Get it home and wait until you can refuel it with 91 or higher. Good luck.

+1000000

You should always have a full tank of gas in anticipation for a major storm

I have always wondered how accurate the digital meter was! Sorry you ran out of gas but... You took one for the team here as we now know how accurate the meter is! Thank you for that

I'm at a quarter tank and just got some regular gas. I want to know how good it is to mix the two and if I should look to get octane boost or is it not worth it? Thanks

Completely not worth it; 87 octane is fine (as addressed above) and octane booster is a waste of money.
