Well for the coupe they should take it away, the hood line is tasteless in my opinion, anti-seamless flow design.

Audi just released the design of their new 2013 A3. Guess what? No hood line.

I hate that front edge. The F30 would look so much better without that design fauxpas:

I read somewhere that the hood is cut where it is as some sort of safety measure for pedestrians. I guess that made me a little less annoyed, knowing that BMW isn't the one to blame.

Nonetheless I wanted to see what it would look like without the noticeable black line running between the headlights.

Especially on white, I think it makes a world of difference so I just wanted to share it with everyone.

What do you think?

Just out of curiosity, does it mean that
1) you actually prefer it like this?
2) you are just not bothered by it enough to be concerned, but would have the clean "line-less" hood if you could have it any way you want?
3) you just don't care either or?

I'm only asking since there have been many others like you saying they're not bugged by it and I got curious as to perhaps what some of you meant.

Thanks

It'd be quite easy for an aftermarket to manufacture a hood+bumper replacement that took the hood all the way to the grilles. Carbon fiber hood anyone? Perhaps with a hump on top even? Hahaha.

Seriously though, if I was still designing and building body kits, I would do it for you guys. But I'm not doing that anymore. Maybe someone else can!

I prefer no hood line you hit it right on the head I like a cleaner hood but I doesn't ruin the front for me.
It could be worse they could have made the front grills huge like on the 7 series I like that car but I think The front is really ugly compared to the last one

But both the current and last gen Z4 has the hood line too. Or did I miss something in that statement?

I don't like the hoodline either but it looks much better on the current Z4 because the line continuous around the headlight and into the fender instead of getting cut in midway through the headlight and then goes up the hoodline like it is in the F30. If they did it the same way as they did in the Z4, I think it'll look a bit better, still not as clean as no hood line but better than it is now.

Thanks for the response. I was guessing that would be the case but just felt that I should check since I'm somewhat (cough) biased.

Considering that the 3 series is a volume seller, I would imagine that a ton of owners would cry & moan if they get into a smallish front end accident and have to replace the hood and bumper.

Wondering why the F30 has that hood line ? COST REASONS. If you have a small accident, the hood will save itself from the damage because there is a hard frame just below that hood line, and the insurance company (and ultimately you) doesn't have to replace your entire hood.

Wondering why the F30 has plastic oil pan (how stupid can this be ?), steel front subframe (instead of aluminium like e90) and full steel rear subframe (instead of half aluminium like the e90) ? The same cost reasons.

Not cost reasons from what I understand, apparently it's a new law in Europe, it's suppose to be less harmful to pedestrian if they are struck.

I've heard this too. I can deal with the hood line if it can help save a person's life/legs. And plus, if there was no hood line, they would have no room for the latch, given the amazing design of the integrated headlights with the grill. Tradeoffs are good.

If it was because of that law, the new Audi A4 and Mercedes C-class would have it too. And they don't.
