Am i the only one who thinks that digital clusters are a joke?
I just ordered a new 440i GC M Sport and of course everything needs to be tiptop. The long list obviously includes the new digital instrument display. Just when i was about to leave the dealership, i noticed one of the X5s had it in. Once i saw it "live" i couldn't but dislike the 1-dimensional over-shiny computer display It loses that charming analog feel i fell in love with long time ago.
I was browsing the 5-series forum to see if there were any discussions or similar opinion but no luck. What do you guys think? Of course the photos present it very nicely and it looks cool, at first. But when you are sitting behind the wheel, it just doesn't feel right anymore. I want a CAR not a console

I tend to agree with you. Just because it is possible to digitize everything it is not necessarely better. However I would probably not notice over time because I only use the information in my HUD.

I love the digital display in mine with the exception of the red Sports display. Luckily there is an option in the IDrive to change it.

BTW, what features do you like with it? Just the looks or is there something else?

There aren't really "features" per se, it simply shows the same dials just digitalised. I prefer it to the display the in the F30. |

Can you make a "Black panel" in the night? That would be cool, to just have the speedometer running, everything else dark.

Felt like I was sitting at a gaming console it really did. Give me classic analogue any day of the week... but sadly with the elimination of as many moving parts as possible, it won't be long before all cars go digital, as it will be cheaper to produce. I believe the new G20 has a part digital display looking at the spy shots! So maybe the silver ring surrounds but with digital needles, thus removing the moving parts! |

my extended display is unreadable white when the sun hits it directly. I'd rather not have that happen for my full cluster.
I checked out the 5 series digital cluster yesterday and its not as flexible as the Audi (speedometer and rev meter resize etc). I wouldn't go full digital unless it brought some game changing functionality.

I like the idea in principle and the photos look good, but I've never lived with one. I think in 5-10 years if the automakers can give consumers the ability to customize the display online via a web app and upload your design to the car, it would open up a lot of options and the personalization would make it more desirable and useful.

Drove my step-son's Prius once (dropped him off at the airport) and everything was digital - hated it. There's something about the classic look that is warm and fuzzy! I can do a quick scan to see all the information (engine temp, fuel, speed, etc). For that matter, I still prefer a good old watch face to the digital ones as I can quickly glance at it to see how much time is left before my next appt, etc.

What i don't like about the BMW digital cluster is that they're not using OLEDs for the dash.
This means that the black is not completely black (as you'd get in a Samsung Galaxy Sx phone) and it kinda spoils the whole thing at night Same goes for the HUD. Since they're not using OLEDs, you can see the reflection of the whole panel at night in certain situations.

I'm moving from a pre-lci 3 to an lci 4. I added the new digital dash and a different trim just so I don't feel like driving the same car

Another thing that annoyed me on the new 5 series is the head up display. The speed used to be just white font but not they added a border around it... It is much more distracting.

Agree that digitizing everything to the N'th degree is not necessarily what I want in a car. The current extended contents setup is a great balance and the traditional BMW gauges are the best - hate to see that go away.
