Sick of runflats

Hey all,

So I'm officially sick and tired of runflats. I have bridgestone Turanza EL 42 tires - OEM spec 17's.

I bought my car at the end of December and about two hours ago I popped my fourth tire on a pothole. I'm in New York, so no matter how much you try there's always that one pothole that you might not see every once in a while. These tires are just too fragile for it.

I decided (depending on cost), im going to go ahead and switch over to regular tires. Can anyone recommend a decent tire (I have a 328 so they dont have to be crazy like PS2's.. It's not a 335) that's reliable for my 17's, has decent grip and handling?

Tons of option in that size (225/50-17) but the Conti's rate pretty highly

For a little more money, you can get the Continental ControlContact Sport AS which have a 50K treadwear warranty (540) and the same other specs as the ExtremeContacts

It's a RWD car (2012 328i only came in RWD) so it's possible that it's a staggered setup right? I'm going to go outside in the morning and check.

Pretty sure the 17's were only offered on the base model 2012 328. I assumed it was a sedan as the coupe uses 225/45-17's

I've had extremely good luck with Conti Extreme Contact DW non-runflats; have them on wife's 128i Convertible, and had them on previous E92 335i. As soon as my OEM runflats wear down enough, I'll be putting a set of DW's on my F30 335i. They are quiet, ride good, good tread life, and reasonably priced. Not on the same level as Michelin PS2s, but unless you're going to do a lot of track/autocross, the Contis are fine and will save you some $$$.

It looks like it's not only us with the 19s having multiple tire changes due to bubbles, punctures etc. Lol. I hear you man but I still think the best solution is run flats with tire insurance. If you don't use run flats then get a spare tire.

Sorry guys, I shouldve specified. I want all-season tires... I dont wanna swap them out in the winter for winter tires

From what I see the extreme contact is a summer tire.

Tire shop told me the DW was a summer, and the DWS was all season.. and hes giving me the DWS for 132$ a tire installed.. which is cheaper than tirerack (not installed)... does that sound good ? or is that not a good tire

I'm wondering out loud if the problem may be with the Turanza EL 42 tires rather than RFTs per se.

My 2006 330Xi came with Turanza EL 42 RFTs and they were terrible. Replaced them with Continental RFTs and those were better. Biggest issue with the Turanzas was unacceptable harshness on potholes, something that was less of an issue with the Continentals. Maybe that harshness with the Turanza RFTs makes them more prone to damage.

Interestingly, my wife's 2006 X3 came with Turanza EL 42 tires but they were go flats, not RFTs. That vehicle had a firmer ride but not the harshness of my E90 and we had no problems with the Turanzas. Maybe the RFT version of the EL42s have a problem.

On my current F30, I replaced the OEM 225/45-18 tires with 245/40-18 tires. also Bridgestones, but Potenza 960AS RFTs. I have hit my share of potholes but so far, knock on wood, have not had a problem with the Potenzas.

Haven't had personal experience but I hear they're a great bang for your buck tire. The conti DW tires are great so I'd assume the DWS are pretty good as well. They'd be the first I'd look at if I were looking for all season but I'm not well versed in the all season tires. (Running Micheline PSS currently)

I believe the DWS's are also marketed as the Continental ControlContact Sport AS's. Specs are identical and it's a very good tire.

Toyo Proxes 4 Plus is also a great choice.
Been running them for the last 2 years and a great all season tire

Just got back from the tire shop, ended up getting 4x continental extreme DWS all seasons. Got a decent price so I pulled the trigger. Hope these work out better..

I have one of the many tire mobility kits available and store it in the "secret compartment" section of the trunk. Basically a mini air compressor and goo. I will also probably add a tire plug kit soon.

One thing that has surprised me about my 428i coupe with adaptive suspension on staggered 19's with Bridgestone S001's is that the ride is far better than I expected.

I thought I might have to consider non run-flats, but now I'm not so sure.

Another factor is the extent to which the suspension is tuned to the OEM RFT's. It's a question I've seen asked a few times, but I've never seen an authoritative answer. If the suspension has really been optimized for the runflats, what downsides will result from using conventional tyres?

It would be great if BMW would come out with some clear and detailed info on this.
