i would love to see the armchair quarterbacks on this and other sites who say this engine does not belong in a BMW, sounds like a Toyota, etc. tell that directly to one of the men in this video.
good job BMW in producing this engine. |

Hmmmm, just BMW going back to it's roots, this is a modern version of the famous M10/M12 engine, that powered the early 80's BMW F1 car, and then later powered the original M3 in NA form.

I had a 328 loaner for about four days, and this little engine truly is fantastic. Regarding the sound, it is very very quiet and the ticking noises are just downright annoying since it makes the car sound either cheap, or broken.
It's too bad Bmw chose to make it such a quiet car, a slightly louder exhaust would have made this perfect. I haven't kept up if there are any aftermarket exhaust yet, but I'm sure there will be if they're not already on the market.

I have driven it in the 528 and the 328. I feel like it is a great motor, but does lack in sound. If I ever get one, a louder exhaust would be my first mod.

Sounded really buzzy to me in the x1, I hope they come out with some better sounding exhaust...

I enjoyed that video a lot, and I really think the engine is a great success, especially for customers looking for a good quality vehicle with a decent amount of power. Personally, I would never drive one though. It's not that it sounds bad, it just isn't inspiring enough for a fun weekend cruise... Nonetheless, the engine serves its purpose well for the frames it was built for.
