328i almost as fast as the 335i?
According to caranddriver, BMW claims 5.7 second 0-60 for the 328i and 5.4 seconds for the 335i. That seems like a rather minor difference (and yes, we all know that the 335i's numbers are on the conservative side, but presumably so are the 328's.)
This can only mean that an upgraded version of the N55 will be introduced fairly soon (I'm guessing in the second model year, just like they did with the E90). |

I agree, willing to bet they will introduce a revamped "335" engine for the second model year (especially since the first year will be short).

The N55 is only one year old, it seems unlikely they'll have a different engine, though they might increase the power output. You can already get the performance kit for the 2011 cars which ads another 20hp, so they could make that standard or boost it slightly more.

I was just about to post a topic about this, thanks!
Given that BMW did the engine upgrade for the e46 and the e90 on the 2nd model year, when do you think the earliest we would be able to find out about the "new" engine specs for the 2013 models? I'd like to place an order in May for a 2013 for ED Fall delivery (hopefully with the M sport package haha) |

I'm pretty sure that the 2nd model year run will come with new engines. My guess is that the roll-out will go... Year 1 - New shape Year 2 - New engines + coupe Year 3 - Vert + M3 Year 4 - LCI

The power went up 6hp on the N55.
NA motors pull nice and smooth. Boosted motors tend to have traction issues, so this doesn't surprise me. -Correctly tuned N52's pull so hard! |

I'm actually surprised the new 335i didn't have the performance power kit included as standard. Seeing as how its a software tune, and doesn't affect the fuel economy at all.
I'm really curious to see how the new 328i feels on the road. As it is there is a night and day difference between the 328i and 335i. |

It didn't, the 306hp figure is the euro-style spec, and it was present on the euro-spec 335i from 2006.

I'm just thinking out loud... Most people buy the base model anyway for whatever reason, so manufacturers probably assume 'let's charge a bit more and give them a "better" base model.
I see people always in 328s or 528s or 740s and even for other manufacturers like s400, e350s, c300s or is250, gs350, base cayman or base carrera. No a lot of people get the 335, 550, 760, s600, e550, c350, ls600, gs460 and so forth. Just my .02

It makes no sense what so ever... the outgoing 335 with factory available power kit can made 330hp/332 lb-ft torque... the new ones is making less. To stay competitive they will definitely be upping the power. |

The price between 328i and 335i is quite big and if i choose 328 then i can buy more equipment . But maybe there will be bmw performance parts for the 328i engine to increase the power.

Nothing new here, the E46 ZCP made more power with the same 3.0L as the E90 330i.

0-60mph is not very significant.
5-60mph as C&D does are much better at representing real life and this is where the gap is probably way more important to start with. BTW, C&D clocked the 5-60mph in a Z4 N20 in 7.1s... not very good compared to the 0-60mph they got (in 5.6s). |
