General Consensus for aftermarket wheel quality control.
Let's get the basic responses out of the way. People run over pot holes they think are dimes but really craters. Wheels will bend, 100 dollar rim to a 1000k dollar rim will bend under all conditions hitting a hole.
OEM rims are not the standard for rim construction. Since we are a BMW forum, BBS is said to make BMW OEM wheels. BBS wheels break too. oem wheels break too. From reading basic information about all the manufacturing procedures, it seems that forged wheels are lighter but may not be stronger than cast wheels. Cast wheels have the most variability and contention. Some say they are cheap, others say it depends who makes it. I personally think a well produced cast wheel is stronger than a poorly/inexperienced company producing a forged wheel. My question is from word of mouth, anecdotal evidence from forums, and history of a companies reputation; Which brands do you guys know of that are really bad, and which brands stand by their products with good quality control (will replace bends, or ship wheels fast without defects, good customer response). as a side note: The rims i'm looking at are VMR, Forgestar, Vossen, bbs, tsw, beyren, and Fondmetal. trying to find a 4 wheel set under 2000 dollars. can you buy a good wheel set for under 2000? Also, i've never had a bent rim in my entire life driving 3 different cars for 12 years. had plenty of punctures in my tires though lol! Last edited by n00bim2015; 04-22-2016 at 06:47 PM.. |

never have a bend or cracking issue on my wheels (OEM and Aftermarket) ... used to buy a cheap taiwanese wheels for my japanese car but have no issue till the day I sold the car
I do agree with you that a cast wheel from well known brand are better than forged wheels that produced poorly from your list of choice.. I pick BBS

I've ran real wheels & replica wheels. Both kinds of wheels can be damaged. It depends on where you live and a little bit of luck.
I would choose a company who has a phone number and picks up the phone and not just an email they can hide behind. Customer service goes a long way. Be prepared for varying answers as this topic is constantly discussed with no solid conclusion on what you should do. |

It's interesting that there are no investigations on which brands have transparent manufacturing processes to the public. Although I dont agree that Asian manufacturing is worse than European or American. IPhones are made in China, and wheels are easier to make than electronics.
Why isn't there a society or regulatory board that approves wheels like car crash and airbags. |

What was said above about working with established companies that have legit commercial address and answer the phone is key. A website and instagram account is not good enough. I also absolutely refuse to do business with anyone who doesn't provide weight and other specs upfront. Having to hunt down a weight is not just annoying I have to wonder why you are hiding such important info. I dont give a rats ass if you are making cast wheels that are bling only, make them, plenty of people will buy them, just not I.

I'm so far having good luck with my VMR wheels. From what I could see everything looked good from a quality stand point and a strong company backing them. If your interested give Brandon a call to see if he has a deal.

All you have to do is google the wheel or manufacture you want, like "forgestar wheel crack", and you'll find all the info you need.

It's rare that we experience quality issues with our wheels. However, when we do, we're always a PM, email or phone call away!
