Usually the trunk pops open because the kick to open feature is getting a false signal from the sonar, that's when I've seen it open by itself.
The random opening would frequently happen when I washed my car and occasionally when I work around house with key in pocket. I bought a BMW leather key fob case and this eliminated the random opening and reduced significantly the trunk opening when I wash the car (still opens sometimes when washing, but only when I am moving around the trunk area). $21.00 MSRP + Shipping for case at BMW website. Good luck!

Should probably keep the key fob inside the house when washing and just leave the car unlocked.

Usually happens when I put key fob in front left pocket. Not so much when in front right

The lock feature while car is still going is pretty great imo. I drive with my dog a lot so it's nice to be able to leave the heat or a.c. on depending on the season.

The trunk has randomly opened 4 times since I've had the car in 4 months. Extremely annoying. Obviously I'm pressing the button somehow, but man is it ever sensitive. Kinda wish I could turn it off in idrive

It's happening to me too. Keyfob is in my bag in the car, I'm outside pumping gas... lights suddenly flash and trunk pops open. Same thing happened when I was washing it once. Very random.

Will be scheduling a service visit today.
The cause identified in the above TSB is owner inadvertently pressing the trunk button. The fix in the TSB is to program/code a two button opening procedure.

I don't think that fixes the problem. Here's why.

My trunk opens by itself when I am standing up and spray washing my rear license plate area, when I have the key fob in a jacket pocket with no pressure on it.
I have read several other owners with a similar experience, being at the rear of the car and either washing the car of having rain/mist falling.

I've also seen the car's headlights flash and seen other electrical items fluctuate when I don't have the key on my person.

BMW has a long history of being lousy at electronics. This is one of those cases that spans almost every car line they are selling.

I'm going to try disabling the foot waving trunk opening feature and see if that eliminates the problem.

I the exact same problem. I re-coded the trunk button so I have to hold it for around 8-9 seconds for it to be able to open.

I have the 2018 340i with my key fob always in a leather pouch and it still opened randomly when i was far away (in my office, in the house). My work around solution is a bit of a pain: manually lock and disable the trunk in the glove comparetment.

Happens occasionally when I'm standing next to the car. I also had a issue with the key activating in my pocket so I got one of these which helped

Bought the car last month and this has happened to me 5+ times.

Another thing is that Driver side door unlocked and popped open while driving on the highway. This happened while crossing a bridge and the metal plates that stick out was not flush with the pavement. This scared the shit out of me

Emailed my SA and will have them look at it soon as possible.

Update:

My SA said that they will be re-programming the Key for two presses on the trunk button.

And replacing Drivers side Door lock

Your key in pocket is most likely the issue

I thought of that as well. However, there were times where the Key was in my hand and the trunk would randomly pop open. Interesting situation.

Brought it up at 30K service yesterday and they did this:
"Performed programming conversion for trunk only after unlocking and set unlock to drivers door only. Customer goodwill (...)"
Now, to unlock the trunk with the key I have to hit unlock and then press and hold trunk unlock. Comfort trunk unlock still works as before. To unlock all doors with the key I have to double click unlock. That should prevent the accidental key-in-pocket unlocking of the trunk.

Anybody have the coding values for the TSB?

I set the trunk delay to five seconds with BimmerCode. I might set it to eight, per this suggestion in the M forums.

25 seconds are way too long for me. After some experiment, I found the following (approximate) values: 32 (~8 sec), 10 (~3 sec), 0A (~2 sec)

I have this same problem and it is not an issue with accidentally pushing the button. The problem has to do with the comfort access for trunk triggering (at least for me it is).

The other day I was pumping gas and holding the fob in my hand so as to make sure I don't hit trunk button and the trunk still popped open multiple times. I purposely stand as far away as possible when pumping gas to try to prevent this. When I took it to Bmw all they did was not allow the fob button to pop trunk unless it was unlocked first. This sounds like a series problem that they just can't solve.

Yes, it happens too often. I have a 2017 430i and my keys are sitting on my desk and my wife tells me my trunk is open sitting in driveway. I've been in stores or restaurants and no way button could be pushed and my trunk is wide open. Funny, I saw a 3 Series this morning with trunk wide open and no one around it in a parking lot. This is not user error.

That's their fix? Go into iDrive and change from All Doors to Driver's Door. Damn right it's "customer goodwill" for no charge.

They’re assuming that it’s user error. It has nothing to do with key fob. I know this for a fact because it’s happened while my keys were sitting on a desk. Another reason I know is I’ve tried dozens of times to open trunk by pushing button with with fob still in my pocket and it won’t open till I push exactly in right spot while in my hand. My Mercedes or Jaguar never has this happen nor has any vehicle I’ve ever owned done this even once.
