Cool Window Tinting - What are your thoughts?

Hi Everyone

I am thinking of getting window tinting done on my ride. There seem to be a lot of products out there. Just wanting to hear your thoughts on the actual benefits and your experience with the newer ceramic films. Have you found it to be money well spent?

There is a long thread on the US forum but our sun certainly burns hotter downunder.

Thanks!

M

My thought is that aftermarket tint is a pain in the ass that shouldn't be required to get basic sun protection in a $55K (U.S. market) car.

Or was that not your question?

I have ordered tint on my new car. I'm going with what BMW offer so they can prep it before delivery. It is a bit more expensive than aftermarket though.

I find (for me) that the tint helps take the edge off the sun in AU. In Brisbane, I had the loan 328i with my child restraints in, and I burnt my finger taking it off.

On my old car with 35% tinting, it never got that hot and the car was black with black interior.

My 2c, but i think it's worth every penny.

Oh... The BMW one is ceramic based (apparently) but I'm not overly fussed as long as it stays blackish for the next 4-5 years .

I have used quite a few different tints on various cars and from what i can see the ceramic products like 3m black have lower heat rejection then some of the metallic films.

In the end i stick with a good installer with a reputable film and in sydney i now stick with Rob @ Hunters hill tinting. Good prices and great work. I use the Quantum films on mine that have a slight silvery tint that helps reflect more light/heat and also gives more privacy.

Took mine to Tint-A-Car. Very happy with the product, labour and price.

I didn't consider doing it with the dealer because of the ridiculous price they quote.

One thing to watch out for is that if you have rattles in the door and you go and tell a service advisor the first thing he would ask is have you had tinting done outside. If you do they blame it on the tinting guys removing and re-installing the door inserts for the tint installation - which quite frankly the tinting guys don't do anyway.

Anyway my door stopped rattling on its own.

I got my X1 from Bris. BMW. They used to have their cars done outside like most aftermarket add on's.
They now do in house which requires a Special Tech. Mechanic to take the Trims off and put back. They do right to the bottom with the darkest legal color UV-99% UVA. You have to leave O/Night to let dry and Re Check everything. Cost around $900.
I hate BMW's greedy pricing on everything but I feel this is well worth it considering I will be keeping my car for a long time.
If your in another State ask your BMW Steal'er what their process is.

Thanks for the insights guys. Never thought much about tints until now. Every car I see on the road has them, go figure...

Will get some quotes - did you guys tint your windscreen?

Pretty sure that's illegal in Australia (apart from that top strip thing you can get as an option).

Better question is did you tint your sunroof? Lots of conjecture on whether that is a good thing to do!

From what I was told, the sunroof is pre-tinted and pre-uv protected from factory (legal requirement?). I may be mistaken, but I am picking up my car tomorrow morning so I'll soon see how dark my panoroof is.

The sunroof does come tinted from the factory.

The panoramic roof in my F31 is not all that tinted - although no doubt it is a little... Probably bigger than the sedan?

I had a look at my pano roof this morning, and it's definitely darker tinting than my windows. Windows were tinted to 35%.

One additional bonus for having tinting is that if a side window gets broken for any reason (stone from a passing truck, wife throwing a brick at you, etc) the film helps prevent the broken glass from spraying all over you in the car.

Nothing to think about.
Just do it!

(Where have I read/heard this before? Hmmmm)

Seriously, choose your preferred tint type, choose a reputable installer, have it done and ENJOY!!!!

It's great.
Cheers
