340i Touring - collected
Just picked up a 340i Touring.
Impressed so far overall. Engine is quite something - it is very very quick. Its quick in a way that is actually a bit disturbing - it will take some getting used to and things happen so quickly. Extreme care is needed. Quick questions: - what happens to the RTTI after three years (I guess this works through the 4G) - does it revert to TMC like the old days or are you stuck paying? - how do you set an address as "home"? I'm sure its in the manual.....

LOL - I don't have any pictures.
Its Glacier Silver with Black leather + Oyster stitch and Brushed Alu/Black trim. I really like Silver even though could be considered dull, though out of choice I'd have had Mineral and Saddle. I quite like the brushed trim - looks hard wearing - but would have preferred something like the dark wood. Options: - Plus Pack 19" 442M, Blue brakes, Sun Prot glass, Harmon Kardon - Auto - Prof Nav - Enhanced BT - Electric Memory Seats - Folding dimming mirrors - Heated Seats - Heated wheel - Storage pack - High Beam Assist on the LEDs - Panoramic Sunroof Observations - Sat Nav is a step change from my 2006 idrive. - Streaming from iphone with album covers is nice, though navigating the music is still a bit clunky. Why can't they get this right? - Glad they finally put a merc style speed limiter on it - Efficient Dynamics - it rates your driving! - Overall build seems a bit cheaper in parts than an E9x. It really needs the leather dash etc. as standard. - Pano roof only tilts front part, and sliding part is smaller. More cost cutting? Mind the pano roof in an E9x didn't seem like they'd finished developing the aerodynamics of it - buffet was poor. Economy is not bad - 55mpg at a steady 50mph in 8th - 37mpg at a steady 80mph in 8th - dips into 20s when pushing on Performance - the pace is quite startling. It will need some getting used to - I'm struggling to find something between Millienium Falcon type hyperdrive and gently accelerating. I'm sure there is something in between but it will take some skill to fully master it I think. Also the gearbox ratios will take some getting used to on the paddles - but this will come with familiarity. Any plans? - not really, will probably put on the 270M winter wheels tomorrow, and might try and swap the 442M for some ferric grey 437M if I can get the man maths right - hence why I might sell the 442M. I guess I really need to get a new set of TPMS for the new wheels as they have batteries in? An old set might only last a couple of years - have these started going flat yet? Needed for the winter wheels, and then 437M I guess. Shame the old Runflat ABS system can't be selected easily to cope with alternative wheels (the coding method looks a faff, but not ruled it out). PS I realise the M3/4 tyres are too large to fit an F3x and 235/265 or 225/255 are needed.

Rather than adding a home address, I'd suggest that you use one of the programable buttons for home. That way if you lose your keys, your unoccupied home address is not obvious for the budding thief.
I have work and home programmed, and I've got into the habit of passing these every day. Saved me plenty of times with the traffic reports.

I cant remember how I set my 'home' address but it definitely did NOT involve RTFM and was pretty easy
RTTI is pants, seriously flawed in my opinion You get 3y and then can renew for about 60 quid a year - I wouldnt bother TBH But the pro nav screen sure is purrdy |

Thanks for replies - it is very dirty now so hardly worthy of pictures.
Must admit the RTTI doesn't seem as easy to interpret as the simple TMC but I assume it is better. Anyone know if the car still has radio-TMC for when RTTI runs out? Is it DAB only or does it still have an FM radio? I've put the home address on one of the buttons for now.

I can't remember thinking "this is a bit too fast" before with a car - but that is how it has felt - especially near the red line. It is ridiculous, and the gearshifts are literally instant - the car feels almost ahead of you.
I don't remember thinking this with various M3 or AMGs from the past - they were all sub-5 sec, not exactly slow cars. Mind, they were over 15 years ago now. Maybe its an old age thing.

Just set up the BMW connected thing.
Which app do I need? BMW Remote or BMW Connected? I guess the most useful thing is emailing new addresses from a computer/iphone and the rest is mainly a gimmick? Just downloading the 2017 maps via the downloader, but I see it does some maps automatically? It looks like it just does the UK automatically, and you need to use USB to upload the whole of Europe (24Gb)?

Of course. But liking the silver colour at the moment, thinking of changing my order from sapphire black to silver. Looking at another can't hurt before I decide.
I assumed on an enthusiasts forum most people liked looking at new cars. Must just be me then. |
