Have you ever delivered a baby with a serious medical issue (ie Downs) that the parents DIDN'T know about beforehand?

You'll be cleaning the breast pump and tubes and constantly sterlizing the damn thing. I have mad respect for women who can breast feed. I did it for a month could not stand it. It's painful, your boobs leak all night and it's really a lot of work. I switched to formula to save my sanity.

nope...we should have a national non-profit umbilical cord blood bank...not a for-profit system that we have (similar to the Red Cross)

I just googled the first one.

That is awful.

We really take for granted how lucky we are to be born in great health.

I couldnt sleep the night before my 12 week scan to check for downs. I would have kept her regardless but the unknown is so scary and then there was the news that I carry the flawed gene for Spinal Muscular Atrophy and my ex s/o would not let them test him to see if he carried it as well. I didnt even want to have a baby shower at that point after reading Google.

I also had a friend who lost her baby at 38 weeks. The umbilical cord was wrapped several times around her baby's neck. Baby was fine at her last appointment and still born the next. So incredibly sad.

We had a level 2 ultrasound because my wife was 39 when our daughter was born. I remember clear as crystal the ultrasound tech saying "I'm not god but I don't see any signs of Downs" and low and behold she's born and the nurse says "uhhhhhhhh you may want to get her tested". Fun times.

I have 3 kids.

6 4 and 3 weeks.

Sometime between the birth between our middle kid and newborn a new test was made available.

It could not only tell you if your baby had one of the common genetic defects, but also the sex.

They took blood from my wife's arm...sent it away to be analyzed. Two weeks later we knew we had a girl and no issues. This was during the 1st trimester. Amazing...

Thanks for taking the time to answer questions...great thread that I made it most of the way through...anyway

My fiance has had an IUD for the past 2 years and we are ready to have children. Any chances of side effects from the eggs just hibernating all this time?

Thx in advance

I was pretty amazed at how quickly I found out the sex. I went to my first OBGYN appointment at 11 weeks (It took me a while to realize I was pregnant and I didnt just skip two periods in a row) the next week they scheduled me for the downs scan and told me the sex. Incredible. I thought I had to wait until I was 6-7 months along to find out the gender. Technology is amazing. I wasnt even showing and I knew I was having a little princess.

Crazy how they actually look like a human at that age and yet you can even see or feel them moving yet.

This thread is making me want to be pregnant again

I remember hearing about that new test. When my last was born the amnio test at the time still had very high risks associated with it which is why we didn't have it done.

Nope...her ovaries have been working fine. Fertility returns immediately after IUD removal. Good luck

Cell free fetal DNA...there is enough fetal DNA parts in mom's blood that we can count chromosomes...it is NOT a diagnostic test, but has much higher sensitivity and specificity than current testing (Quad screen and nuchal translucency ultrasound with free beta HCG and PAPP-A) that there is no reasonable reason not to use the test if screening for DS is desired.
