Noisy injectors- is this normal and common?
I have 318d and I noticed a very slight gentle rattle on acceleration as soon as I picked the car up. Booked it into the dealers and the technician said it was a normal engine noise, he said it was injector noise as the pressure was so high on diesel. It's worse when cold and a kind of mechanical gurgling sound, difficult to describe.
I didn't agree as never had it on any other car including bmw. We compared against another 320d they had and I found that had it too, although not as loud, reluctantly I had to agree that it's a characteristic of the engine. Do others have this? If so I think it's a poor design as with the radio off it's very noticeable, not good really expected more from bmw. |

No else noticed this? Surly I couldn't of had two with the same issue. Driving tonight with the radio off and it's really annoying, might ate it to a different dealer. Any other Ida's what it could be?

Do you sense it is diesel injection or something g else? What sort of revs? Does it come and go with 'on and off' the throttle, according to engine load? HighlandPete |

You are describing a very vague issue here. Have you owned a diesel before? They are noisier than petrol but I wouldn't describe it as a rattle which suggest something loose. If you don't hear it when you get to 30mph then I suggest it is just the Diesel engine sounding normal.
Diesel is great for Economy and torque but the start up noise is always harsher than a petrol engine |

I've had quite a few diesels and appreciate they are noisier compared to petrol, this sound is more of a mechanical rattle, it's present when accelerating at any speed. It's not very loud but can be heard with the radio off. Sorry I know it sounds vague but the best I can describe is gentle rattle or gurgling noise on acceleration.
I certainly don't think it should be there but dealer thinks its normal engine noise and comes from the injectors, apart from this noise overall engine noise is acceptable. |

It does it at all revs, but more at lower speeds and when setting off. I feel it is engine related but can't say for sure, uphill and cold I would say worse. I just wanted to get an idea if anyone else had noticed it, sorry not much info I know.

Is it something like the sound of the older petrol engines, which could suffer from pre-ignition (pinking) then the timing was out? That would come and go on slightest change of throttle under a bit of load. That is the sort of sound we can get from diesel injection. HighlandPete |

Thanks for all the help, the sound does not really change, it's more there for a second or so then if you keep pressing on it seems to go away, take your foot and gently accelerate again, back it is regardless of engine load. It's note petrol pinking and I've checked the exhaust clip which seems fine.
I just wanted to get an idea if it was normal and from the responses it seems not. I'll happily let a forum member drive it just to stop me thinking its just me! Bedfordshire/ herfordshire area. |

Interesting - BMW engines (diesel particularly) are known for sounding a bit shit at idle but once you're on the move (even leaving idle) - they're some of the best.
BMW used to use Piezoelectric Injectors on their engines and only a couple years ago did they switch to Solenoid Injectors (which are in our F30 engines) and these are noisier and produce a "clackity clack" type sound - rather audible when stood outside the car on idle - particularly on my 28i as otherwise it's a fairly quiet petrol motor. I've driven numerous 20d's and don't recall this to be a stand-out sound. In fact, I remember the 20d sounding half decent between 1800-3500rpm under load. Video? With a decent microphone?

As for the noisy 2.0d, that's just how they are, and the 2.0i's are noisy too. The new 2.0d in the X3 is apparently much queiter, and will hopefully be fitted to the LCI 3 series. Sorry this is no help to current 2.0d owners though. |

Thanks, turn on the radio is not a solution and also I can listen the noise too.
The noise is from the injectors and I think the B47 also have the same injectors... will see... Cheers. |

tapping noise while idle
I bought a used 2012 BMW 528i xDrive with 56k miles on it. A few weeks ago I noticed a really strange occurence: when the car is in park/neutral/drive I hear and feel a quiet tap once every 2-3 seconds. I hear it through the floor board and it seems to be coming from the engine compartment. It’s does not seem to increase in frequency when I rev the engine, though it’s quiet enough that even just putting the car in drive makes it barely audible. Opening the hood and trying to find it there seems all but impossible as the noise is not really audible. It’s much more of a “feel” than “hear” thing.
I am wondering if this is the sound of impending doom. How can I prevent my and my car’s early demise? also its equipped with high preassure fuel injectors that sounds like a diesel which i found out is normal, now im worried about the tapping noise . |
