Front Brakes - How many KM before changing them and coding??

Hi all,

I wanted to check with F30 owners to see how many Miles/KMs you were able to do on your car before having to change your front brakes. I have 35,000 KMs (@ 22,00Miles) and the I-drive is telling me that I only have 1500KM left. The brake pads are essentially at 4mm according to the dealer.

Is there a reason I would have to go to the dealer instead of a BMW specific garage to do this work? Is there coding to be done once the Rotors/Pads/Sensors are replaced?

The dealer wants $805 for the job while I can get all original parts with labor at a garage that specializes with BMW work for $480.

Let me know what you all think.

Regards,

Carmo

The mileage is going to be off for sure. It's just an estimation and will be reset when software gets updated. I'm currently at around 45k km on original pads/rotors.

There is no coding, you can reset the brake service interval yourself in the instrument cluster just like what is done for oil service.

I'm at 25k miles and have tons of life left. I've heard of many cars going beyond 50k on the original brakes but it definitely varies depending on many factors, mostly how you drive I think.

That, and highway versus in town driving percentage.

As said, no coding necessary. I believe there's a published procedure to reset the brake countdown - search around.

My 335d has the original pads: 106,000 miles.

Hmm. I bought my car as a demo. I drive in traffic every day but I did replace my rear brakes after 1500km. Thanks for the info everyone.

2014 328 xdrive, bought new. Now at ~ 13,500 miles the display claims that I have 70,000 miles to go front and rear. That's up from the initial time to service when I first got the car (50,000 miles?) How you drive makes a big difference. I'm a very mild driver and to the extent possible, without annoying the guy behind me, coast up to stop signs and lights, etc.

I have done 58k km and the front brakes is at 3k to replacing. However the Idrive jumped from 50k km to this in the last 1-2 thousand km.

My rears are still at 35k km. Standard brakes, none of which been changed yet.

I have about 40,000km so far. I'll have to check how much life they have left. Obviously, many factors can affect longevity. Highway vs city driving, aggressive driving vs normal driving, etc. I'm curious to see how long other members brakes are lasting too.

Hopefully, you haven't had many issues other than brakes. Replacing brakes is a minor issue to contend with when you own a car in Montreal. The rough winters and the amount of salt they use will destroy many cars by the time they reach 100,000km. Trying to avoid getting your windshield chipped every day from the thousands of trucks that race by you every day is challenging. The amount of potholes (thousands) is criminal. Not blowing a tire or bending a wheel is simply luck. Have you driven on rue de la Savane and some surrounding streets near Rolls Royce/Ferrari Quebec? Absolutely ridiculous.

Ok, back to the brakes...

Another question is are the Genuine brake pads and rotors the best option or are there some aftermarket products that are better for a similar price?

Regarding pricing, here is what I was quoted from a local dealer for my 2012 320i (tax and labor not included):

Front Brake Disc
part number 34116792219
Price $148.82 Each

There's also another FRONT BRAKE DISC part number 34116855006
Price $154.58 Each

Front Brake Pads
part number 34106799801
Price $182.16

There's also another FRONT BRAKE PADS part number 34106856191
Price $182.16

Carmo
Your $480 quote for Genuine parts and labor sounds like a good price considering I was quoted around that much for the parts alone before the tax.

When I still had my 2013...

48K km, still around 30k km left on both the front and rear. Service report said 10mm in the front and 8mm in the rear at 46k km.

Original pads and rotors.

My 2015 on the other hand has around 4k on it currently, when I picked it up it said 50k km on both front and rear - increased to 60k km front and rear currently.

Go aftermarket and grab zimmermans or something better.

You can probably do the job yourself for less than 350$ for the parts.

I just ordered my rears and will be doing it myself this weekend if they come in by friday.

4mm is pretty thin TBH, will last you a month or two depending on driving.

I'm not joking at all. While the rears were changed ~45K miles, the fronts are the original pads & rotors, at 106K miles.

Never been to Definitive; not too interested in paying for a used car dealers' overhead. I buy new or private party only.

I'm amazed. I've never had brakes last that long before.

Btw I was not suggesting you buy from them; it's just that their ads used to be everywhere and I always wondered what kind of place it was. I can understand why you buy new or private.

Ahh, the wonders of 116th Ave NE: the classic American Auto Row.

I don't often drive that particular block of 116th; I think they were at the corner of NE 8th and 116th where the Chick Fil'A is at one time... not sure.
