I imagine the rationale for the difference in UK and US markets is that US cars generally use the brake light to indicate (signal). So BMW had to implement dynamic braking another way - makes sense (although I've seen flashing brake lights on a Merc and it really worked well in that I realised he was slamming on the anchors). Additional brake lights aren't as effective (IMO after looking at the Vid posted above)

Win for the UK? Just one more question then; do the hazard lights deploy just as the vehicle is coming to a stop like they do here in the UK? I assume in all markets, the windows and sunroof close in this extreme driving situation, along with seatbelt pre-tensioners. Now I just want a video of the UK ones flashing!! Goddamn snow here!

It's not a standard feature. The option called "Active Protection" does this & it's optional in most markets (doesn't seem like it's offered in USA at all).

Though I've quoted you, don't quote me (!) but I read here somewhere it isn't a US option because it's standard.

although this is a 5 series and a UK model, you can see the brake lights flash here in this review of the 535d by autocar.
I always through that flasshing brake lights were allowed in the EU. As others have stated, it may not be a legal standard in the US. |

The F30's here in SA defintely have them. If you apply the brakes sharply, really hard - with no ABS intervention, both fog lights light up, when ABS is activated the lights flash, and when you come to a halt the hazard lights light up.

+1, and it's probably going to be the BMW rear-ended. It's the most common multiple car accident involving BMWs, as the car behind one can't brake as well as the BMW does.

It's also called Brake Force Display. I've witnessed it like 20 times. Heavy braking starts flashing the rear fog lights and automatically turns on the turn signals as well.

Not sure what the point is if they flash when the end results seems to be a rear-ending anyway.........

In the US if you slam on the brakes, the brake lights that are on the actual trunk lid will light up. Under normal braking they don't light up. |

Unless you code your car. I unlocked this feature and it works great.

Bmw had this function way back in the E46 years. Albeit not activated due to different laws and regulations. Some were able to activate it with coding.
Is there a way to code the flashing so it activates with normal braking? |
