Steering Rack Issue Poll

Hi Guys, thought I would start a new thread, as my original thread was when I thought it was shock/suspension related. Knowing now it definitely isn't and that my original thread has somehow strayed off the original topic...
I want to hear from others who have the same Steering rack issue's and where they are at with their dealership. Especially, if there are people in Perth with the issue.
I was advised a couple of weeks ago that my new steer racking has been shipped and that they were advised by BMW AG that it is infact a fix for the steering rack issue. I wont hold my breath, but fingers crossed.

How is everyone else going.

Is there a test that can be done? 8,500 or so km's on my odo and I can't say I've noticed anything.

Is this about vibration, or noise, or both?

I guess I haven't got an issue.

This is the thus sound going over pot holes. You'll also feel a bit of vibration in the steering wheel when this happens. Trust me, you will know if you are experiencing it.

I wonder if this is an issue that happens on cars with vss or adaptive suspension. I've got both

Mine isnt a vibration issue, it is more of a thud and rattle (not sure if thats the best description) from the steering rack vicinity over certain road surfaces. Not a vibration. Very noticeable.

The best way to replicate would be with car turn off completely, sit in drivers seat and slowly rock the steering wheel from left to right, and you can hear a loud and quite obtrusive noise from the steering rack, both inside and out of the car.

FYI I have neither VSS nor adaptive suspension.

Apparently BMW AG is sending their newest revised Steering rack from Germany and that it 'will' fix this issue... As I said previously... not holding my breath.

I tested this for curiosity's sake. I don't feel I've experienced any issues, but when the car is off, and I turn the steering wheel, I hear a clunking noise, but whilst driving I don't experience any thuds or vibrations when turning - when going over a pothole, I hear a thud, but think that's more the suspension making the noise.

Not sure if maybe this dry steering test is maybe normal? Or maybe its a different noise I'm hearing.

Me too. I do say thank you to whomever for having an issue free car, now that the wiper position has been fixed.

I have the issue as well, thud/knocking sound when driving over certain bumps in particular in left turns. Can also hear the sound when stationary moving steering wheel left and right.

I raised the issue with BMW back in Dec, a few weeks after i bought it. They did not know what caused the issue. The car is going back in this week for the regional tech manager to look at it.

I find the noise extremely annoying and the fact that it has not been fixed after two months is completely unacceptable. If they don't fix it soon, i'm considering returning the car and demanding a refund. Under the new consumer protection laws, a buyer is entitled to a refund if a defect is such that had the buyer known of the issue prior to purchase, the buyer would not have made the purchase (that's definitely the case for me).

Will keep you posted.

I met with the regional technical manager again. He said that they have produced a whole new steering rack and steering column, they are sure this time they'll have the problem fixed.

Mine are on order from Germany now.

Here's hoping.....

The lift off position of the drivers side wiper was too far across the windscreen, so when I did lift the driver's side wiper away from the glass, it literally rubbed the clear coat & paint off the very back edge of the hood.

Mind you, this was a VERY tiny but noticeable chip, which could have rusted or grown over time.

All I did was show Stillwell BMW & asked them to reposition the wiper blade & touch up the chip. No, not good enough, they replaced the wiper as well because it had a little dent & mark on it.

All is good now. When I park the wipers in the lift off position & pull the driver's arm back off the window for washing, there is ample gap between it and the edge of the hood.

David

If I'm reading you correctly, your wiper arms can now be raised off glass when they are in the parked (off) position? If so, this has been one of my peeves with this car. So annoying that the wipers tuck underneath the hood so when I wash car I need to first move wipers so I can raise them and clean underneath.

FWIW, you wouldn't have to worry much about the hood rusting. Its Aluminum.

No. The wipers have to be placed in the 'lift off' position, being pretty much vertical. Then you can lift them off and away from the glass.

As for aluminium hood, I was aware of it. The dealer wanted everything to be just perfect. Their choice. Probably easier to say what they did, rather than explain the technicalities of the build.

I met with him as well. Same story: newly designed steering rack and column have been ordered from Germany. Should be here in a few weeks. Hopefully this does the trick.

I have a November 2012 build which already has the new rack and new column. I have zero vibration and no squeak when turning wheel (which just about every car I test drove had).

Keep in mind that November builds contain other revised parts in addition to the rack and column. See here:
