Exclamation 397 vs 401

As the title said... i had 401 double spoke wheels in my sport line 335i and i had two damaged tires -225/ 40 r 19..
So my question if i change the wheels to 397 double spoke on 225/45 r 18 which means i will change all wheels and tires will solve the problem of seeing huge bulging every two months on my wheels ..
can every person just told me his experience on his wheels ,,, either 18inch or the 19 inch..if you had bulging on the side of the wheels or not and how did you solve the problem..
and thanks a lot for all of you guys ..

I have had no problems with my 397 square 225/45/18 set up. We just had a very nasty winter and the resulting huge potholes. I also don't run RFTs though either. I have Michelin PA3s for winter and PSSs for summer.

I can't imagine you need winter tires judging by your location, but maybe consider getting some good all season tires and a tire mobility kit? Might have more options for tire stock for when you run in to problems. It is a fairly common problem for nobody to have any RFT tires in stock.

Edit: Just in case: RFT = run flat tire.

So you had side bubbles on BOTH your fronts on your 19" 401 wheels? It's probably your stocks RFTS. People have complained of side bubbles on them.

I wouldn't change to an 18" wheel just b/c of tire bubbles. Get new tires for your 19's (non RFLTS), NOT new wheels.

so which is better changing the 401 tires to new non RFT or changing the four wheels and tires to 397 square non RFT?
which will solve the problem?

It may since runflats are notorious for bubbles. However, you should make sure to do everything on your end to prevent bubbles. Under inflated tires will sometimes make your tires prone to bubbles as well as hitting potholes. But many times bubbles are actually defects in the tires themselves.

I don't know if it will completely solve the problem, but with 18 inch non-RFTs you have a couple things going for you over the 19 inch set up (in my opinion of course). With the 18 inch you have a little bit more sidewall to protect the rim. Even though the latest generation RFTs are much better than the past, it seems I see way more threads about bubbled tires with RFTs than without. Last, it seems like even BMW dealers have a hard time keeping RFTs in stock so a conventional all season non-RFT might be easier to find in stock if you run in to a problem.

No problem. Did you ever get a second opinion on your rims? Were all four of them truly bent?

I honestly think if the roads are terrible then the 18's with non runflats are the better option. I have 19's with non runflats and have a bubble on one of the tires due to hitting a pothole that I did not see. With the 18's you'll have more sidewall and slightly more protection compared to the 19's. Just my 2 cents lol

My 335 came with the 401's and Continental Summer Tires. I did not have any problems with bubbles, but I did have a lot of road noise. I switched to Michelin PSS's last fall and have had ZERO problems with them. Handling and road noise are vast improvements over the previous RFT's.
