Oil Catch Can? N55 "oil blow through" issue?

While browsing burgertuning.com to learn about different available mods, I happened upon this "BMW Oil Catch Can". The description reads:

http://burgertuning.com/BMW_335_oil_catch_can.html

"It's no secret that the BMW N54 motor suffers from serious oil control problems causing oil to blow through and coat the intercooler and charge piping, gunking up intake valves and the VANOS system, lowering the effective octane, and generally degrading engine performance. The higher your boost levels the more apparent these problems become."

There is a kit for the N55 as well.

Is anyone out there knowledgeable about this "oil blow through" issue and knows whether it might also apply to the F30 335i?

Thanks!

it happens in all turbocharged engines...

I wouldn't stress about it. I drove an Evo VIII at 24psi (peak boost) for 85k with no oil catchcan, and honestly, after changing piping or servicing it, not much oil buildup at all. Small amount is expected...

Thanks. That's helpful. This was the first I'd read about the issue.

I dont have an f30 but do have a n55 and highly reccomend it especially if your planning on run higher boost . I had got a half engine light on about a week ago Nd popped out my obd reader and got a code fuel system rail problem which is where your fuel injectors arent sprayin propperly but cleared it and went away then a Week later changed my charge pipe there was sooo much oil every where and all over my maf sensor the. Did some reaserch aNd found out it was the oil from my blowback getting on the injetors cloging them. bmws with turbos are known for this problem according to my sa its only 200$ to prevent future problems imo! God knows what other piping is coated with oil

That's good info. Did you take any pics of the oil spray?... Who makes a Catch Can for the f30?

Evo's push a lot more boost than an N55, ANY day.

Regardless, how much boost are you running?

That's silly, as an EVO isn't Direct Injection - the whole lynchpin of N54's buildup problems.

Touche, totally forgot...I recant my comparisons...

I do remember my brother's 135i having a catch can (MY 2008)...his dealer agreed to install this.

Don't worry I spoke with Terry at BMS it's not a big deal on our motors. It was really bad on the N54 but that motor had a list of issues. If your still concerned there will be some coming out later this year.

Cool. I'm not super concerned but my opinion is, if you're going to mod and piggyback or ecu flash, just go ahead and spend $150 or how ever much this will end up costing - very small insurance policy/longterm maintenance mod.

I agree. Trust me I am on the BMS tech fourm everyday pushing for F30 parts. There is some really cool stuff for the E9x's N55 that I can't wait for and Rob Beck is even working on a Turbo upgrade for all N55's.

This is a Direct Injection issue. NOT a turbo issue. This gas is from the crank case that really should be sent to the exhaust system, but in order to keep the tailpipie gases clean, manufacturers recirculate it to the intake tract.

In a port injection car, the fuel is sprayed before the valves, so the fuel sprays cleans off valves with each spray. With DI, the fuel is injected directly into the cylinder, so there's not fuel spray to clean the valves. There are plenty of Porsche Panamera/Cayenne engines with oil gunk on the valves too. The Audi RS4 was the first car to really bring the problem to light.

looking for any updates to this topic if any - have 2013 335 N55 w 60k miles - only using AFE scorcher w intake and also adding DP in spring.

Is this overkill for my situation but maybe necessary when adding a JB4?

It's not necessary for the f30 n55, nobody makes one.

That's for an E chassis.
