Clear coat peeling

I opted for one of BMW's esthetic packages that include waxing the body panels and cleaning of wax residue.

After the treatment, I noticed that the clear coat was peeling off on the rear bumper. Can the wax job described above cause the clear coat to peel off?

No. I can't imagine anything short of paint remover doing that.

My dealer explained that my rear bumper was previously repainted before and it was poorly done. I'm skeptical about that. I swear that my rear bumper was flawless before the wax job. Either way, looks like I'm SOL.

I suppose it possible that a poorly prepped/repainted bumper clear coat could start to flake/peel if the detailing folks used a polisher with too much pressure or time thereby creating too much heat/bite. If you are confident your bumper paint was ok when you gave it to them, stick to your guns.

Obviously they're denying it and I have no proof. Therefore, I'm f*cked.
Thanks for the reply though.

Check with the service departments operating guidelines, many times service writers are required to walk around the car and do a visual inspection before any work is done to prevent false claims against them. If your service writer did NOT inspect the car or mention any damage, then they cannot claim the car was previously damaged. They did not perform their due diligence before working on your car.
However, good luck with that, I once had one dealership provide proof that another dealership had not performed work they had charged for. In the end they finally reimbursed the charge but never admitted guilt.

My dealer takes pictures of the car from all angles before it goes into the shop. That way there's no question as to its condition when it arrived. With a camera contained in every cell phone there's no excuse for not doing this.

And they've lost a customer. Take advantage of social media to spread the word to stay away from them. Don't get mad, get even.

Unlike what others are telling you, there is no way to tell from a smartphone photo if a car paint job was done correctly or not.

Just look through the numerous posts on people that have purchased a used car and now find the paint on their wheels flaking off.

In both situations, if any paint job is done improperly, the defect will eventually come to light. The more done to the area the faster the defect will start to show itself.

Don't believe a word of what you dealer says. They are trying to deny liability. This is the time to start moving the case up the BMW dealership later. In fact, screw that, just make a phone call to the dealership's GM and tell him/her that your going to file a complaint with BMW customer care...its worked for me. Good luck.
