CarPlay

I have ordered an F30 LCI with Pro Nav and Enhanced Bluetooth.

Does anyone know if this will be enough to support an upgrade to CarPlay when BMW release it this year/next year?

Probably not, but Ford recently announced that the MySync version 3 will be getting updated to include Carplay/Android Auto. So there is a slight chance, but I wouldn't hold my breath on it. They'd want you to buy the newer car.

Unlikely. BMW will probably charge $500 for the software like they did with BMW apps a few years ago. That said, I would be really nice if the NBT hardware could be updated in the near future.

Is CarPlay really necessary? Right now in my 2016 BMW I can press the voice input button on my steering wheel and SIRI comes on to take my commands. I use this for calling all the time. The one thing that BMW could do is support the apple maps for driving directions.

Would love it but Apple dont seem to have any plans to support much in the way of 3rd party apps on CarPlay in the near future. I'd be delighted if that changed.

Waze, the popular traffic app, is coming to Android Auto, Google announced Wednesday at its developer conference, Google I/O.

I just ordered a vehicle today and was told iDrive 5.0 wouldn't be backwards compatible, but in all fairness, SA's probably don't know all the details, given CarPlay won't roll out til the fall.

FWIW, I have CarPlay in my new '16 Honda Civic Coupe (touring trim) - really nice car...

CarPlay is nothing special. I definitely prefer the way our F30's display album art and info via bluetooth/USB/Snap-in adapter. Plus, there are very few apps for CarPlay - Pandora, Spotify, TuneIn. Here's a complete list: http://9to5mac.com/community/running...d-iphone-apps/

The BMW's interface with the BMW App is definitely better than CarPlay.

Of course, YMMV.

And it doesn't look like Waze is coming anytime soon for carplay:

I'm pretty sure Apple won't allow 3rd party navigation apps on Airplay in the near future (1-2 years)
After 1 week with carplay on a rental Impala, I can only say: Carplay SUCKS!

More than likely iDrive 5.0 will not run on 2016 NBT-EVO head units. Looks like the NBT-EVO head units supporting iDrive 5.0 (F30 beginning 7/16 production) have more RAM. Possibly other tweaks as well. RAM upgrade is the only change known so far.

CarPlay will rollout to cars built 7/16-8/16 after its release. No charge dealer software upgrade. Probably an I-step level change.

It needs a touchscreen display so won't be backwards compatible. Probably could be retrofitted at great cost!

No touchscreen in F3x implementation of iDrive 5.0.

Would of been nice to get the touch screen, works well with the tile design of idrive 5.0.

Disagree.

Tried it on the new 7, and while it's "cool", I think it's more dangerous while driving. The iDrive touch controller and steering wheel buttons are safest and most convenient. Not to mention the screen had fingerprints all over it, and the responsiveness wasn't as good as my iPhone.

New Audi A4 with CarPlay doesn't use touchscreen. It utilizes the MMI knob/controller.

I agree with dwalls90, my wife's Honda Odyssey has a touch screen that drives me crazy. Much harder to use and way more distracting. With the buttons and knobs I don't have to look away from the road to know I'm pushing the right buttons

There is no way Waze will work with CarPlay, Android auto probably as it is a Google property. I have used Carplay inn 3 different vehicles and found it to be frustrating as it won't let you do very much while driving. For example you can't input destinations via voice while driving. iDrive is preferable in my opinion.

I have used Apple stuff almost exclusively since 1987 and am finding that they come out with half baked products and services, then instead of fixing stuff, they announce more magical things. I am done, I just moved to a Galaxy S7 edge from iPhone 6S plus.
