They have smoothed start up since my 2014 320i. It was rougher with that one. I hardly notice it with my 328i.
Lot of very sensitive men on this thread.

I didn't code it out, I believe 328d have learned my preference and now it is always off when I start the car.
In the beginning it was too intrusive for my taste, so I was turning it off, but somehow I do not need to do it anymore. |

I actually really like the auto start/stop function. I find it completely unobtrusive on my 335 with a man-tran. It was definitely more noticeable on my old 328 with the sport auto, but it really has never been an issue on the manual. I applaud BMW's attempt to increase fuel economy standards in ways other than simply de-tuning the engine.

BMW just sent me a surveymonkey survey about auto start/stop. (well, primarily about auto start/stop). One of the questions was about my response to the removal of the disable button.

As other have said, I feel that it may be bad for the engine to constantly turn on and off like that. That being said, when I picked up a vehicle like the M3, fuel mileage was least of my concerns so at least in the M vehicles, it is absolutely not needed imo.

These engines are designed to retain heat when the coolant is not flowing, and there is an electric coolant pump to allow temperature management without the engine being running. So, if it's already at temp, and oil has sufficiently coated everything, starting it is very easy, and puts minimal wear on the starter, and technically saves wear on the internals by having them stop while the car is stopped. Sure, the starter may wear slightly quicker (but really, a cold start at 20F is going to be MUCH harsher on the starter than any auto-start/stop start), but a starter is much cheaper and easier to replace than piston rings or crank bearings. |
