I have 6k miles on my car now and it seems the noise has gone away. A few of the little quibbles I had with the car just went away. only time it will make noise is if I just switched from comfort to sport. There is a small timeframe when the shocks are adjusting that its very stiff and can clunk. just a second or two.

Not in Australia it isn't, $79,000 is an F320d Sportline, before I added all the xtras. With extras and on road costs $87,000k with $3k dealer discount , $85k. You guys do pay a lot less in the US

This is what I found to hopefully be the problem.

I have the same issue on the day I pickup my vehicle , I go back to delership in 2 days, they road test it , they find out that the left front shock is lacking, it took 3-4 weeks to get the parts from German.

That damper looks to have leaked out all of it's fluid, meaning there is NO damping, and the wheel is left to the pogo'ing of the spring motion. That's a very serious and potentially dangerous problem. The clunk/thunk I have in my steering is different. The dampers are working in my 335i. There appears to be about 3 different clunk/thunk scenarios being posted. 1- there is a thunk/clunk when the car goes over a sharp bump. 2- there is a thunk/clunk when the car is moving and the driver is making a turn over bumpy surfaces. 3- there is a thunk/clunk when the steering wheel is turned beyond 90 degrees left or right, even while the car is not moving. This is the one I have. Maybe some of these are related. I need an avatar when the dancing BMW gets slapped up side the head. |

Finally I have picked up my car yesterday and after testing and testing it today I can post that the noise in my car has gone. The pleasure of driving a BMW is back : ) . What BMW told me is that they have checked all the front parts in my car (for example the sway bar linkage) and found that some parts were not adjusted to specifications in torque adjustement. Thanks to wtmeyer from bimmerforums for his info.

I'm sure some of those changes are addressing the greater vibration issue. Once the new F30's come in with the new parts I'm going for a test drive to feel for myself. For me, I know I'll be po'd if the over all steering feels better. I'm taking mine in next week to have them look into the light "thunk" I have in the steering. Listening to it while not moving, I notice it directly in the area of the steering wheel to rack linkage, not near the suspension bits. My issue may not be the same as others posting on this subject. The problem is that the thunk seems to be stronger on certain days and almost not there on others. I explained that to the service writer, so I hope it's acting up when I take it in. Very odd why it's distinct for a few days and then quiet. |

I picked up a new 2012 328i on November 17th, and it has VSS. I have the dreaded thunk especially over rough roads. Sounds like something is hitting something under the dash, but it's just noise from the steering gear (my thinking it is) coming through the steering shaft.
I also had someone move the steering wheel while I looked under the hood. The noise is definitely coming from the steering rack and steering shaft. If I'm stopped and shake the steering wheel left to right quickly, I get the same thunky clunky noise inside the car. I hope there is a fix soon and will follow these posts until there is. I don't really want to take my car in until I know where to tell the dealer to look. |
