Faster shifts?

Hey all,

So I had a 330i loaner while my 2013 328i was in the shop for Shockware, and now that I've got my ride back I notice that my shifts (SAT) aren't as "sharp" as in the 330i. Both have SAT and I just felt less "lag" in between the shifts in the 330i.

Did something change, transmission-wise, in the last few years? I've got 65k miles, is it possible I need to change trans fluid and pan? Figured that was more of a 80k+ thing at the earliest.

I'm not commenting on the actual speed of the cars, just the shifts. It is a noticeable difference. Also, the 330i was equipped with the SAT, but my car is coded for it (2TB, and yes I've verified it's correct and there was a noticeable difference after I coded).

Just trying to get those sharp shifts I was feeling in my loaner in my car! This lag is very noticeable now.

Thanks for any help,

tgm

While I can't comment on if this is the cause of what you observed but yes, there was a transmission upgrade in 2014 I believe. Not just software, hardware too.

Although completly unrelated to what you mentioned, I know for sure they made a change to the transmission cooling. This was done to enable the "sailing" eco-pro mode.

Also launch control was added, although this might be purely software based.

So yea, its quite possible you are seeing some improvments in the hardware.

328i has the GA8HP45Z transmission and the 330i has the updated GA8HP50Z

You can feel the difference between the 335i and 340i aswell

On the 2014 8-speed, there's a way to reset the transmission adaptations. You may want to ask your dealer about it, only takes a few minutes.

Long story documented in another thread, but I was having transmission issues and although my SA had said they would do it for free, I discovered a way to reset it myself (with the correct software and ethernet to OBD cable for laptop).

May not help, but on the other hand...it might!

Thanks for the tips, I tried the TBA reset today and it seemed to shift better. Will see how long it lasts, based on that thread it seems to be a temporary solution.

As for connecting and resetting the transmission, since I'm CPO and have a friendly SA I will probably go to see him if this doesn't stick.

Also make sure they upgrade the soft on the tranny to the latest.

May help.

I can definitely feel the fast shifts in the 340i in sport+ or while shifting manually vs comfort mode where it is more smooth shifting. The 320 tranny I drove as a loaner car was slower shifting and didn't have sport + or launch control as it wasn't a SAT with paddles.

As an update, doing a adaptation reset and fluid change had a very noticeable impact. I obviously never expected the car to shift like a brand new 330, but the difference was more than I would have expected from wear and tear.

I'm happy with how it drives now and will not pursue this any further. Thanks for the tips given above!
