Man, my AH3 has been in the shop for almost a week now due to a check engine light and waiting on a fuel temp sensor to arrive (a non-hybrid-specific emissions system)

But on the bright side, I've been in a 328i long enough to put a week's worth of miles onto it for my work commute. At the pump, I measured my commute average at 23.2mpg, which is right about in line with the low end of my commute mileage on my ActiveHybrid 3. This was largely helped by a 100mi highway trip over the weekend. Otherwise my DIS mileage at the end of the day is around 22-23mpg, which I know from experience equates to 10% less at the pump. The highway gas mileage and even city steady-state-45mph gas mileage is fantastic on the 328i, but as soon as I hit stop and go, my gas mileage just tanks.

So to everyone lamenting about your gas mileage in your AH3, I doubt you'd be the kind of person who'd be getting the purported 30-40mpg in a 328i either!

And I've also forgotten how un-smooth it was in a conventional vehicle to crawl at 5-10mph cycling between the gas and brake, and dealing with catching the transmission between shifts, or too much engine braking while coasting, etc. Surprisingly, I find it easier to modulate the car smoothly in the hybrid switching between all-electric drive at low acceleration and boosting into 2000RPM at higher acceleration, compared to the same ZF 8spd connected to an engine.

Agree. It does look way better de-badged. Black car black windows and black wheels myself and love it. I don't care if people know what kind of car I have.

So I somehow managed to leave the engine running for an entire day/night... Didn't think it was possible at all. Is there something wrong with my car or is there a way to do this?

Do you lock your car?

My experience has been that locking the car while the engine is in the READY position (e.g. start-stop engaged, engine stopped) will turn off the engine. However, if you lock the car while the engine is still on, it leaves the engine on.

The 2nd case should've been obvious though that you left a 6 cylinder engine idling.

My low mileage thusfar is a bit of a concern for me as my previous vehicle was a 2012 328i Sedan and my lifetime average mileage for that car was 23.0mpg. I am driving the same commute every day with the AH3 as I did in the 328i. Don't get me wrong, I am not expecting the mileage of a prius but for as much time as I find the AH3 driving in electric mode and my near constant use of Eco-Pro I would have thought it would AT LEAST be better than my 328i. I only have 1800 miles on it so far so hopefully it improves over time...

What percentage of your driving is city/highway?

At 15,000 miles, I'm finding that most of my highway driving easily creeps into the 35-36mpg range. Before, when the car was new, I was hitting close to the 31-33 mark.

So yea, I am seeing around a 10% improvement over the course of the miles.

You'd be surprised, I've found that doing Eco-Pro while doing city driving actually decreased my MPG. Eco-Pro is best for the highway in my experience.

This is based on informal tests by looking at what MPG is on the trip computer before I jump on the freeway.

Hi guys,

I'm thinking of picking up a used 2012 Activehybrid - any current owners have any comments re: reliability/issues that they have had?

No issues after 3 years and 52K mi on my 2013 AH3. Still on original brakes which apparently last a long time on this car due to regenerative braking. I'm averaging 27.5mpg with mix of city and hwy driving with fast acceleration. Apparently, every 45K or so you will need a fluid replacement which will run ~$600 after warranty expires.

AH3's transmission fluid, pan and filter is to be changed every 30,000 miles. Expensive with fluid alone costing around $400 (lists at $88 per liter) and the pan and filter $350 (list). Add in labor and your in the $1,000+ range.

My car has been reliable and enjoyable. After warranty expired I've needed to replace the auxiliary battery and MAF sensor. Had JB4 on the car when the MAF went bad, don't know if that was the cause.

That's a bit disappointing. Same style of driving here and I'm getting 22.5 mpg on my F80 M3.

FWIW, my max mpg on this car with same mix of driving, but way easier on throttle, was 32. But that was just an experiment, as I have a lead foot. Also have the 19" M wheels. On flat hwy driving at 65mph, you should average something like 34-35mpg.

If you want a better indication of real-world averages for this or any car, check Fuelly's website.

Looks like we are both getting ~2mpg over average. But I'm using the car's trip computer rather than manual method. The car's trip computer is easily within 10% error.

I have NEVER gotten 25 MPG on mine. 20.2 is my average as of this time.

I had a thread on this several years ago and using the vehicles info inflates your speed and mileage (and thus your MPG). Iirc, the speed (and mileage) is 7%-8% higher than reality. Some posted that this is because of a German law and known issue.

Also sucks for leasing - as your miles per month (based on 1k per month) get shorted by 70-80 miles per month.

Personally surprised this has not been the subject of a class action suit.

Sounds like you simply have a problem with your particular car.
