Don't just put it close. I actually use the garage remote to press the button on the mirror. Hold it for 15 seconds and you are good to go.

Searching for something else but felt the need to comment here.

I dislike the fact that the ignition needs to be on before I can use the garage door opener on the rearview mirror.

I remember when I first got the car I couldn't figure out how to program it, then I look it up here and I was missing a step. It has worked perfectly ever since I can open my garage door from way down the street now the range is great too

Haha....same here. I spent about an hour in the car on day 1 with steam coming out of my ears trying to get the effing thing working. Eventually I did get it to work with both garage doors. The only things that were more frustrating than this were - trying to get email to work in Office (still unsuccessful with Android or iOS), and trying to get video files to play off an iPhone in the Media Snap-in (never got it to work and that phone is now dead).

I got mine to work in 2 tries. After reading all your posts I feel like I won the lottery. I programmed the mirror just like the procedure says to. Garage door didn't open, I got the idea to push the learn button on the garage door unit after programming the mirror, and it worked!

I think what's happening to some of you guys is the mirror gets programmed from the remote just fine, but the opener unit can only program one remote at a time. The remote has its frequency programmed in, the BMW needs a remote to learn the frequency from.

So program the mirror using BMW's instructions, then use the garage door unit's learn procedure (hit the learn button) as if you're programming another remote. I guess it makes sense when it's laid out that way.
