Active braking?
So I'm driving my 2017 440i this morning to work and I was following a car. The turn signal of the car in front came on indicating an imminent right turn. As we approached the intersection, the car in front proceeded to turn right. I was going straight and I decided to speed up and pass the car as it was completing the turn (I know, not great defensive driving). As I was speeding up, the red car symbol/warning came on the HUD. I ignored it as I knew I was going to be fine as the car would be out of the way before I pass it. But all of a sudden the brakes slammed on automatically and slowed my car down significantly!
Now I know the brakes are primed when a potential front collision is detected but I had no idea the car would actively brake! I've got ACC, Driver Assistance and Plus package. What package is it part of? It took me by surprise as I was not expecting it at all. Its unnerving to know that these nannies can take over my car suddenly like that. I hate not having control over the speed/acceleration of my car. Is there a way to turn it off? |

Driving Assistance Plus Package includes Active Driving Assist that can "reduce the severity of pedestrian and automotive collisions by using a combination of driver alerts and automatically priming and/or activating the brakes."

Ok thanks for that. I guess I should more carefully. Will this feature bring the car to a complete halt or it is just a momentary nanny? Probably not a full halt as it seemed to have let off a second or two later once the car had slowed down. I had my foot on the gas pedal and that resulted in a sudden acceleration once it let off the brakes. It felt like I had lost control of the car. Oh well, live and learn.

Interesting...
Be careful though. It seems that it doesn't fully auto-brake to avoid a collision as it does on the 5 series. It's a bit confusing since the Driving Assistance Plus on the 5 series does more than on the 3. If you look at IIHS at "Front crash prevention": 3/4 series: http://www.iihs.org/iihs/ratings/veh...s-4-door-sedan Low-speed autobrake: In the 12 mph IIHS test, impact speed was reduced by 7 mph. High-speed autobrake: In the 25 mph IIHS test, impact speed was reduced by 6 mph. 5 series: http://www.iihs.org/iihs/ratings/veh...s-4-door-sedan Low-speed autobrake: In the 12 mph IIHS test, this vehicle avoided a collision High-speed autobrake: In the 25 mph IIHS test, impact speed was reduced by 24 mph

My car autobrakes to a halt, it has done so several times. But only if the obstacle is stationary, if it moves out of the way the car keeps on moving.
don't ask me how i know... |

What's interesting is that you have the Driving Assistance Plus package.
I thought that one was only available on the 5+ series. On the Swiss configuration site, for the 4 series you can only select Driving Assistance (no plus there). From what I see on the IIHS site, even though the packages are named the same (Driving Assistance Plus), there's a real difference between the options... Can any gurus enlighten us?

Is this the same in the 340? I have the DA plus, never had the car brake itself.... it did in my Infiniti, but not this car. Perhaps I have this turned off?

Yeah mine kicks in time to time... when cars slow suddenly - even though I am in control and not going to hit - I can feel the brakes start grabbing.
It's definitely helped me stop sooner to avoid a few near collisions, but has scared the crap outta me when I went around people before...

The left or right hand turn Is constantly one of the "trips" for the collision avoidance systems on all brands. Your car doesn't know that the car in front of you is changing profile or has the blinker active. The human knows that although it appears you are barreling towards a decelerating vehicle by the time you get there that vehicle will be gone. Hence once you pass the point of no return the car jumps on the brakes to "help" get started slowing down. One way around this is to lightly press the brake during approach and wait until after the turning vehicle has cleared your path for acceleration.
