I think it depends on what tires you got and the condition of the roads in your area. I ended up with 20in low profiles so for me it was a no brainer to get the insurance.

I think it depends on how much you drive and the general road conditions. I got the 18" tires and couple with the fact that the dealers wanted between $1400 to $1700 for 3 years warranty, I don't think it is worth it for me.

In the Philadelphia area I opted for it. Like any insurance you hope to not use it but you're happy to have it if you need it.

Discount Tire offered to give me a "lifetime free replacement" warranty on the tires that came on my car (Goodyear EfficientGrip) for $184. Basically, as long as the tire has legal tread, they will replace the tire if is suffers any damage.

I have the M-Sport, and the $184 is probably a slightly better deal than it should be, because they didn't have the 255/40r18 size in their system, so he just charged me the price for the 225/45r18 on all four wheels.

I went there because 2-3 months out of the year, the temps drop below 40 degrees, here, and so I was looking to put all-season tires on the car for those months. I ended up talking to the assistant manager, and he said if I bought that warranty both on the existing tires, and the A/S tires (whenever I actually buy them), then he will (re)mount and (re)balance either set of tires whenever I want. So, they will swap between my summer and the A/S tires for free.

Their price for the warranty is calculated based on their sale price for the tire. The warranty for the A/S tires I get will be less since I won't be getting run-flats on those tires (Bridgestone RE970AS).

My BMW dealer offered me their 5 year tire/wheel warranty for $799, but I still think this is a better deal for my driving style. My comprehensive insurance policy would cover any damage to the wheels.

How do you handle the fact that the performance tires lose their tread in under 10k miles? Do we just have to eat that cost?

What did you have to pay for the insurance and for how many years?

In NY, yes. I have it on my car now and it has saved me over $4500 in bent rims and bubbled tires. not to mention, over a 36k mile lease, I won't need to replace a single tire from normal wear and tear, since by now, all 4 have been replaced by the warranty. I paid $1000 for the coverage for 3 years (for a Mercedes with AMG wheels).

I bent 3 rims on an E46, but I've not had any issues with my wife's X3 in a year so far, but those are not as low a profile tire. Also, amazingly, never had a bent rim on an '07 X5 I had for 50k miles with 20" wheels and low profile summers. But that may be because they were monsters and they were just wider than the potholes
