That sounds pretty bad for a diesel unless you're heavy on the go pedal.

In those strong winds on Friday I drove my F31 330D for 2 hrs into North Wales with car fully loaded plus large roof box into a head wind gusting upto 50mph (weather man said). Car indicated 42mpg doing mostly 65mph plus a few stop start hold ups along the way in Eco Pro.

I wasn't, it was on cruise control.

40 seems ok to me (for a car with 313bhp) but clearly most are getting better. Let me see if I can improve- I will report back!

I think cruise control can actually decrease mpg achieved.

That surprises me. I wouldn't have thought that.

I've never found using cruise control to improve my mpg in any car I've had with it fitted.

If you are a steady driver, anticipate what is ahead and work with hills etc., cruise control can make mpg worse, even running same average speeds. I can see it helping erratic drivers to get better mpg, those who are constantly on and off the throttle and/or all over the place with speed variations.

I drove today (mainly motorway and A roads) and easily got 49mpg at 75mph with CC. Cars only done 500miles so I'm really pleased so far. I gave it some beans as well. Overall MPG so far is 43.1.

Perhaps you are still driving it M3 style (ie loads of revs)

First long drive in our F31 335d today - Perth to Herts. Adaptive cruise much of the way, some time in ECO PRO, mostly in Comfort mode. Steady low 70's till across the border then 80-85 through most of England, until the M1 was reached and then we were stuck doing 60-70 in the jammed up outside lane.

Car had 1 passenger and a set of wheels, and a large bag, running on 18" Pirelli Winter RFTs. The car started the journey with just 206 miles on it.

Averaged 39.3mpg at an overall average speed of 74.8 mph, one stop for lunch.

Our 330d would do that at around 42mpg, so a little worse I guess.

I used ECO PRO to start with and whilst we were doing 70 in Scotland and the average was 40 at that point. Upping the speed and going to Comfort only dropped the average by 1mpg! Not worth the bother!

The only thing I wondered was whether the sodden road conditions in Scotland had a significant impact? increased drag perhaps?

Adpative cruise is interesting, very good in some ways, but you have to develop a technique to get the best out of it. I agree that it isn't the best thing for fuel economy as it only looks one car ahead and has to use the brakes, when a good driver would have been coasting already.

After about 600 miles I'm sitting on an average of 38.9 mpg. I hope that gets better as the engine loosens up. No motorways where i live. Only single A roads. Been taking it quite easy with only a few high spirit trips/bursts. I'm offshore now so it will be interesting to see what the mrs puts on it while I am away. She drives much slower than I do. Hopefully when I get back the miles will be up past 1000 and I can start driving it harder to loosen the engine up a bit

I've had 38-40 out of mine so far on the motorway. That was over about 120 miles, 2 up plus small luggage, not on cruise and some gentle speed variation around the 70 mark as still early in the running in period. As well as the fuel consumption history I checked my "Eco Pro" analyser at the end of the trip and had 5 stars for both acceleration and anticipation so I was obviously driving gently and probably not how I would generally drive it.

Now she's run in I have managed to get 21mpg over about a 15 miles trip...not on the motorway and on my own. I, er, didn't bother checking the eco pro analyser on that one

Also it's winter, which negatively affects fuel consumption

Mine sits at a pretty constant 38mpg.

I am frequently in Sport, normally either in sport gearbox or using the paddles. I wouldn't say thrashing necesserily (as that seems impossible with the 335!) but certainly spirited driving every day. A mix of motorway, A & B roads, short and long journeys.

To have little or no consideration to fuel economy and always drive the way I want, I am very happy to be seeing 38mpg. My E92 320d would only deliver around 42-43mpg and there's a world of difference.

My advice... ditch eco pro and drive the car you bought....

With Petrol being cheaper than Diesel that would make the 335i the ECO choice out of the two.

.......something very wrong about that

Your maths I would say

Can't see how you'd get 21 out of the 335d on the road if your wheels were actually moving.

And driven on the motorway as described above I would suggest you'd better 50 mpg.

Trust me...I would not want to drive like that all the time. But I am amazed how eco the N55 is if you want it to be. Probably because it has the torque curve of a diesel and combined with the 8 speed auto in Eco Pro mode at 70 on the flat its doing under 2k rpm and not screaming it's nuts off like a more traditional petrol turbo would be.

Trouble is you keep getting this over whelming urge to floor it to kickdown above 5k and listen to it sing. (where it's doing more like 20 mpg)
