BMW 420d Fuel Consumption
Evening all,
Recent got my BMW 420d M Sport 190BHP 2015, second hand at only 31,000 miles , a lovely upgrade from my old BMW 316d 2013. One thing I noticed was my 316d was incredible on fuel, pushing 50MPG+ urban and averaging 500+ miles minimum urban and well over 700+ motorway. Since owning this 4 series I've struggled to hit 35+ urban and 45+ motorway. Is the 4 series generally a more thirsty car? There's only 80BHP difference and still a 4 cylinder turbo diesel. I'm an amateur so apologies! |

This 80 hp difference is also 70+% increase in power, and more powerful engine naturally consumes more fuel
35 mpg urban and 45 highway seems to me as a very good result for 20d. I guess there is no difference in fuel consumption between 3 and 4 series as there is no significant difference in weight, and drivetrains are similar. |

My 420dx with same B47 engine drinks during winter 6.8 l/100 in my urban mixed everyday use and best long distance consumption that I have seen was 5.0 some weeks ago. Those translate to UK mpg 41.5 and 56.5 I think.
Those are idrive numbers though, I have not calculated the real consumption. |

Generally it is a great engine but I do know from others that it is a lot thirstier in winter for some reason. In my last BMW diesel a 520d I averaged 55mpg incredibly a 2009 example with only 27K on her.
I do know of a few folks that manage a 50mpg average but not much more,,, |
