After several hours of reading, I still haven't figured out, what would work best. I plan on using a square set up and would like it to look flush. Do I go with 245/40/18 front, rear or 235/45/18 front and rear or 235/40/18 ?? Which would give me the better look and would be considered BMW approved. The tires will not go on the stock wheels...I intend on buying new ones. Help!!!

I ended up going with the 235/45/18 18x8 square set up with 5mm spacers on back....looks fantastic and flush even without the spacers on back ....it looked awesome. 235/45/18 looked better to me than the 245/40/18. I tried both.

I have an M sport and I'm planning on running a 19x8.5 inch rim square setup. Should I run 245/35 or 255/35 or 245/255 stagger? I feel like 255 is too big for the 8.5 inch rim, but I don't want to sacrifice any grip going down to 245 in the back. But I assume it won't make a big difference.

I just ordered wheels and I really hope I didn't mess up! Due to availability I bought 18x8.5 +40 wheels for all four corners. Would 245/40/18 work properly? I don't really want anything sticking out too far. From a conversion chart I found on a E90 forum, they should stick out 10mm further than my stock 17" wheels.

No issues with 245/40-19!
Vitoco has a square 245/35-20 (equal diameter) setup on F31 with ET35: f30.bimmerpost.com |

I think you'll definitely have problems with that wheel width and offset up front.

Same here. Michelin Pilot 4S 255/35/19x9.5 square. I did more research than anyone should ever have to and was a guinea pig for the 255 in front. No rubbing at all and 255/35 will give you within 1% of OEM specs. (xDrive)
Please excuse the wheel gap as I haven't lowered yet. It's still better with 19s than the stock 18s though. I should get a window sticker that reads "Mind the Gap". (UK) http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...0#post21816070

You would need a at least a 12mm spacer up front to clear the strut. My set up now is SSR TYPE C 18x8.5 et32 w/ 255/40/18. No rubbing even w/ full load or hard cornering. I also had a square set of BMW 513m before 18x9 et29 w/ 255/4018. No rubbing, but the front wheels were out a little, and needed more camber. |

Thanks dizzyF30
Wondering if someone can help me understand the mismatching of stock tire sizes on wider non-stock rims? A typical stock staggered 19" has 225/40/19 on 8" in front and 255/35/19 on 8.5" rears. I'm familiar with the importance of diameter matching (especially w/ AWD), offsets, and effects on speed when going non-stock sizing. Forgetting about all of that for a minute and focusing strictly on tire width and traction advantage on a 19" diameter wheel, why do some recommend a 225, 235 or 245 tire on a 8.5" or even 9" wheel? It seems like a 255 is nearly square on a 8.5" wheel and a factory recommended combination, but a 225 on 8.5" seems very undersized. When comparing a 8.5" on a 225/40/19 vs 255/35/19, wouldn't you want that extra ~1" of tire width for traction? What are the advantages of going with a wider wheel when the tire size is the same width (again assuming that diameters and speedo are in spec)? Is this strictly for the appearance and/or poke? |

The section size in contact with the road increases slightly with wider wheels for the same tire size also. https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiret...jsp?techid=200 I just made this change myself, keeping the original MPSS tires on 8.0-->8.5" 225/45/18 front and 8.5-->9.5" 255/40/18 rear. The car feels much sharper with more grip both front and rear. It is easily noticed and a change for the better. |

Thanks for your response Red_Baron (and sorry for the late reply). It's interesting that you noticed an improvement just increasing wheel widths, but that does make sense. I'm still struggling with a 225 vs 255 on a 8.5" rim purely for better front traction and less understeer. While a stretched 225/40 gets you ~0.2" more width (and some sidewall stiffening) on a 8.5, I would still guess that a 255/35 on 8.5" rim with an additional ~1" width would perform better (and has slightly shorter sidewall).
I'm I wrong to assume that a square 255/35/19 on 8.5" rims will provide better overall traction and handling (and less understeer) than a square 225/40/19 on 8.5" rims? |
