Didn't have much hope of it being good, but after using I find that 10 mins after playing music etc, the sound gets choppy and the software does not respond to iDrive controller commands.

Seems to buffer the commands and then try to undertake them all at once.

Apart from that, it doesn't use the HUD at all for nav or music playback so useless from that perspective.

Glad I rang up this morning to take it off my order after reading this! Just selected it thinking it'd be a good thing to have but after looking into it seemed like a bit of a gimmick I'd use once

Will this not get better with updates? I've ordered this and thought it may be useful for other things except music, as I use USB for that.

Didn't bother with this on my new car order, the BMW software is so good why would you need CarPlay

I had it on a hire car in Italy and couldn't stand it. Just don't understand the need for it if you have Pro Nav.

Apple Maps are crap for a start, I can already send imessages via iDrive / voice recognition, and I use the integrated Spotify app for my music.

I find Apple maps routes and traffic far superior to pro nav!!

I had read it was shit already but took the view I will have the car for a few years so take a punt on the chance it may improve.

I prefer the look of Pro maps and the fact that Apple nav does NOT show in the HUD is a pisser.

Apple maps is just about as good as google maps these days, but yes it's a shame it's not in HUD

At least with Apple you can use it on idrive. Bmw doesnt recognise Android (paid by apple) hardly at all

I can only imagine your maps are out of date?

If it was Google maps I could understand, but Apple maps are awful.

I love the RTTI which has worked well for me too.

There's definitely no nav directions etc on the HUD, will play around with music but the biggest issue is choppy sound and non-responsive menu screens after 10 mins.

Dealer is investigating, doubt they will come back with anything.

We've had it on our Octavia for 1.5 years. Used it once. Once was more than enough, it's crap.

I find mine to be excellent as well. No complaints at all.

Mine wasn't working when I took delivery so I lived with idrive 5 for a month till it was updated. It was ok but not great.

Then when CarPlay was working I literally can't stand the idrive 5. The menus and flow are not good at all in comparison. CarPlay is so much more intuitive and syncs so well with an iPhone.

How often does a guy actually use nav anyways. It doesn't bother me at all that it doesn't shoot directions to the HUD.

My sound is crisp and never cuts out. Had a little fuzz during a phone call a couple of times but that's it.

Bloody typical. There was me singing it's praises saying iv never had a problem and boom today it's buggy as hell. It fine as long as you're on car play but as soon as you go to map or menu it cuts out. It also cuts out when the reverse cam is on

I much prefer to use navigation with the sound off and just rely on the HUD instructions in both of our cars. Without nav instructions appearing there, I wouldn't have ordered HUD as that's the main purpose for us.

That's a great idea. I'm sure if I had done that before I started using CarPlay I'd be missing it big time.

Definitely get what your saying, maybe the integration will come soon.

This weekend, I actually found a way to use CarPlay and still have the BMW Navigation on by accident after having the car for a week. Basically CarPlay handles my music and phone with Waze on in the background(no choppy sounds here and much better than the regular bluetooth for me as it kept having issues connecting especially after phone calls). If you go into Menu then press Maps it'll open up the Pro Nav. I turn off sound so all audio directions come from Waze. For me this is awesome because I liked the connection I had with CarPlay but hated the maps.

Never tried it in an F30 but I have it in my Skoda and I love it, and I'm pretty sure it's going to be the future. Yes it's a bit buggy, but it works fine the vast majority of the time. Eventually all proprietary in car entertainment will be replaced with CarPlay / Android Auto type software in my opinion.

I believe car play requires USB so you would have to use another USB port for that. Pretty lame that it's not wireless I just use Bluetooth.

I don't have hud but get directions in split screen mode so no need for audio navigation. Wish I had HUD for that though. Does HUD show if you're in sport mode or you still have to look down for that?
