Dealership Damaged my Wheels

I paid in excess of $250 to get my tires mounted and balanced onto my rims by the dealership, thinking they will know how to handle M wheels and treat them right. Lo and behold, at least 3 of the rims are damaged right around the lip of the rims. I suspect from the dismounting process. Something rubbed up against the rim and shaved off a piece of rim from about half of the perimeter of the wheel. I know this wasn't present before obviously. And I still haven't driven the wheels (I brought just the wheels and was planning on bolting them on later).

I'm waiting for a call back from the service supervisor. What should I expect from them? I suspect they will at the very most offer to fix them with one of those mobile vans that fix wheels without even taking the tire off. Is this an acceptable fix, or should I take the wheels to a wheel repair place (about $100 per wheel to powder coat/clear coat them I think) and have them reimburse me?

I hate that!!! The dealership should accept the responsibility and have them refinished..... I wouldn't accept anything less.

You know that each M Wheel costs over $1000? (COST PRICE)
My buddy works in parts... he told me. I wouldn't let them get away with this lightly.

Usually dealers have a plastic piece that mounts low profile rims to prevent this from happening.

I would ask them to keep the car, fix the wheels and lend you a car.

I just bought an executive 430ix. There was road rash on 3 wheels. The car had 3300 miles on it. The dealer fixed them. I can’t tell where. They look perfect to me. These were optional 19 inch wheels. I don’t know if they took the tires off. I would say probably not. Why don’t you let them fix them and see what it looks like. Then if it’s not acceptable, then complain. There are enough things to worry about, without worrying about something that may happen.

This happened to me. BMW of Oyster Bay located in Long Island. They said they reviewed their cameras and didn't see any damage occur. I requested to see these recordings and was refused. Contacted BMW of North America and they were no help either. Kept calling the dealership and BMWNA numerous times for the next couple of months and nothing ever came out of it...

Hope your outcome turns out better man. Sorry to hear about what happened.

Must have some future 16k cameras that they would be able to see scuffs being made on a wheel. Or the cameras placed inches away from each wheel during mounting.

So. Pissed. Sorry man!

This is my fear anytime I have a shop touch my car. When I brought my brand new powder coated wheels to Goodyear to install my Conti's, I stood right there in the shop next to mounting machine the entire time. Same with alignment. Im sure they thought I was psycho... Thats okay. Its so sad that one must go to extreme measures to make sure someone else doesnt fuck up your stuff. Sickening.

Not one but three out of four fucking wheels?!!! Make them pay. Period. Either with replacement wheels or a legitimate powder coat job. Im not sold on alum wheel repair although Im sure they can work some wonders. I would prefer powder coat or complete replacement if I had a choice.

Tough beans. Working with a dealership is a necessary evil most of the time. I brought in my factory matte paint car in to the dealer for a winter tire swap and they washed it without my permission. I ended up with a hairline scratch about 6 inches long on my drivers side fender. Matte paint can't be repaired....unless they repaint the whole panel
They refused to take responsibility and even unplugged my dashcam in the process. Disappointed to say the least. Some dealers are hardly accountable and could care less about someone else's property.

Last fall on my old 335 the dealer scraped my rim. Blue mark across it. They refinished the wheel, and it looked awful. The paint did not match, the M sticker fell off, and the barrel was not even painted. They admitted it was a shitty job, so they just ordered me a new rim.

Same dealer on my NEW 340. Goes in a month after having it for summer wheels. Dealer scrapes the paint off my front bumper... ugh!!! I was getting a clear bra done soon too. They repainted, and I had the Bra installed. Looks new. However, I will not be going back to that dealer.

I took my car to the "mod friendly" dealer in the socal area for an oil change.

I didn't pay attention until I got my car washed the following week but I had a sizable chunk taken out of one of my 437 wheels and there was a cap to a quart of oil left under my hood. Pretty sure the damage was from the dealership and not the car wash people but I had no way of telling at that point.

Good luck

That's shitty!

Just a heads up, next time save a ton of money and take it to a place like discount tires who do that type of work all day everyday....dealerships don't usual deal with a lot of tire work I'm guessing.

Dealership monkeys at it again.

I hate to see stories like this. Good luck with resolution.

you paid how much?! I'd want a refund and new wheels.

In the UK, I pay max £15 a corner for mounting and balancing tyres (and disposal of old ones).

Just a quick update. Dealership said sorry that the damage "may" have occurred during service... That they would like to see the wheels and repair as necessary, and that someone would pick it up from my house (as I'm far from the dealership). It looks like they use a mobile-type repair service and I'm not super thrilled about that, but what can you do... At least they are taking responsibility. I'll update you guys on the fix. So far the damage control by them has been good.

I just wanted to touch on the topic of why I didn't go to a low cost place like a tire chain shop for $15 a corner. Hindsight is 20/20, and now I realize that going with the dealership and paying big money for a Roadforce balance is not necessarily the way to go. My rationale was, that BMW has special mounting points that any shop may not have the proper equipment to lift (thereby crushing the BMW mounting points if you don't use the special interface). Also the damn RFT that aren't seen on any other make and a bear to take off without messing up the wheels (RIGHT????). And the perception that BMW would have better trained/more careful techs. Of course all these beliefs have been thrown out of the window due to this experience. They place the least experienced kids at the tire station, maybe 1 step up from the cleaning station.

One last thing, these are not $1,000 rims but $500, and only 18 inch (not low profile). Still expensive enough. I would never own BBS forged wheels after an experience like this.

They may have used one of the old style mounting machines. The touchless ones are called Korgie or something...

^ this. I have a nail in one of my RunFlats that I need to have fixed. I'll be standing next to the tire guy as he removes my tire from the wheel talking in his ear that the rim is PERFECT before and better be perfect after........

Right and how are you going to bring up camera footage, but then refuse to show me? If it was indeed true and you have evidence to back you up, wouldn't you want to come forward with it?...

Not worth it. I've curb rashed the wheels myself afterwards and actually recently bent/cracked one of the wheels. 437m wheels too, got a replacement on the way and hope to be on my summer setup within the next week.
