If youhave that budget as cash then I would look to get a pcp on say 3 years. You would be able to get a brand new at least 330d and have the monthlies covered by your pot of cash as discounts are so big these days.

Thanks for all the replies guys, they have some real valid points.
Basically confirming what I already knew - the 330d is the better option if budget allows!
I have had 6 cylinder BMW diesels for the past ten years so I know what they are all about, however am limited in knowledge of the 4 cylinder engines...
I think I will bide my time until the right one comes along.

My previous car was an E91 330d Auto, my current car is an F31 330d Auto. In terms of running costs, there’s virtually no difference.
The F31 gets about 3mpg more overall but servicing, insurance, tyres etc are all so close as to make no difference.
If you’re used to a 6cyl, stick with it and go with the 330d

I had a E90 330D auto and bought a F30 330D auto

E90 was doing 37MPG average

F30 is doing 43MPG average

The running costs seem the same, but I have 19" wheels and the tyres are loads more

But its a nicer car...gearbox alone makes it 100% better.

I did drive it like a girl down to Cornwall, 3 days down there and then back home. 560 miles to one tank and 47 MPG....well happy and can be done if you drive 70- 75 MPH

I would have thought the significant different is the additional 25% torque of the 330d (560NM vs 450NM) BHP isn't particularly relevant for a diesel.

I'm not going to start a torque vs BHP debate.. but to say BHP isn't particularly relevant for a diesel is ridiculous

Must be a North East thing as I get 42.9 mpg from my 330D xdrive - garaged overnight so quickly warms up in morning which helps.

Although I was quite dismissive of eco pro when I first tried it, using it on daily commutes, has added at least 2 or 3 mpg.
It's something.

But why get a powerful car and down-tune it for more MPG? That’s essentially what eco pro is doing.

The commute to work is mostly 30mph zones. There are a couple of national speed limit zones of say half mile stretches with roundabouts at the end of them. It's still a powerful car, but whatever, I don't use eco pro all the time.

I read his post as he's trying to say why buy a 330d to drive around in eco poo mode.. you may as well buy a 320d ED instead.

Across on the VW R forum, some owners not only drive in eco mode but also put in 95ron fuel.

95 Ron fuel is that bad my wife has banned it being used in the R.

It's always great to find out what mpg you can get but in normal use it's going to be 30's or below

Or a 340i...

I put my car in eco pro when I'm just trundling along in traffic. Being in sports mode when I can't enjoy it brings nothing to my driving experience. It just adds extra frustration!

Thats what I meant; buy a 320d and then put in in Sport if you want to go quicker.

Well I've just put a deposit on an F31 330d Blue Performance M-Sport Auto Touring in Alpine White.
Granted it is slightly high on the miles (117,000), but I usually buy them around that mileage and take them to around 200k or so over five years. Never been a problem in my previous cars (E39 530d / E60 535d / E91 330d) - I think the six cylinder engines really help when clocking up these miles.

I pick it up on Sunday and cannot wait.

Thanks for all your input guys, I'm sure I will have plenty further questions on this forum....

Exactly Rich, a 340i may very well be my next purchase. But for the present I'm happy with the 330d, and use it as such whenever I want. Next proper run is North Durham to South Devon.

Congrats Joe. I'm sure you'll love your choice. I've felt that my 330d M Sport has been the best car that I've had - it's got loads of pull from the bottom of the rev range and to me sounds just great.

Enjoy
