Theres alot of rationale posted everywhere with regards to adhering to the manufacturer recommendations on oil change intervals.
Ok fine our new synthetics may no longer breakdown as earlier as the oils we used to use.. but what about the particulates?

In my other cars I use AMS oil occaisonally and every other interval I only swap out and replace the oil filter only myself.
I guess my question here is:

does it make sense to allow the dealership to do the free yearly oil changes and maybe mid-interval swap out and replace the oil filter yourself?

Why wouldn't you want the dealer to also replace the oil filter??? :

I meant that between dealership oil change intervals, I replace only the oil filter myself.. but not the oil

Seems like waste of a filter. With many owners having their oil analyzed and finding it still performing well at 15K miles I wouldn't bother, but I change my oil & filter at 7.5K miles.

It can't hurt. Especially If you use your car in a spirited manner or do lots of short distance start/stop city driving.

I've posted this elsewhere, I have been doing Blackstone oil analysis on my cars for 5+ years what I find is that the oil is lasting at least 10k miles and it still has additives in it when I change it out. I am up to 11k miles on the oil in my E39 M54 530i.

As for the filter, I'm sure it wouldn't hurt but it's nothing to get worked up about. If you do it, make sure you add a bit of oil to make up for what it absorbs.

Regards above post - interesting data. I would add though that the N20 turbo will degrade the oil quicker than an NA car. I'm not saying that modern additive Synthetic oils can handle this - it's just a point.

Asking you if it makes sense.. leave the oil in since it hasn't degraded under 10k but only change out the filter more often to remove the particulates.

While I have no empirical evidence to suggest one way or another, if it were my car I wouldn't.

A dirty filter will perform better up until it restricts oil pressure and goes into by-pass. Seeing as this never happens I wouldn't worry about it but go ahead and change the filter if it makes you feel better. Wrench boredom is real.

You are definitely not hurting anything by changing the filter more often. The benefits of changing only the filter are not clear. Cartridge filters are inexpensive so if a few dollars give you peace of mind, why not!
