I say follow what the engineers have said in the manual. Why go against something that was recommended by the designers of the product?

I share the same view. If BMW formally puts it in writing (i.e., owner's manual) and I follow it, then I minimize any sort of credible dispute against me if I have a warranty claim that can be tied to the break-in period.

My 335 had 12 miles when I picked it up off the lot, so I'm sure the techs who set up the car for delivery and any potential buyers who test drove it have already helped me break in the motor per this advice
