Fast Mazda

whilst out and about yesterday I went to overtake a mazda 6 sport (couple of years old model I think) and I had to work really hard to get passed him!!!!!

I very nearly embarrassed myself - I thought I would just easily breeze passed but that was not the case - it had a surprising fair turn of speed and I obviously totally under-estimated its pace

anyone else here been caught out by a wolf in sheep's clothing???

The more embarrassing , the better!!!!! LOL

Good car the Mazda 6.

The 2.2 diesel is a pokey motor.

Yep.

Got caught out by a Ferrari F12 last summer, all 730 bhp of it.

Normally supercars will just let big bikes past, but this guy knew how to use his car. Ultimately a GSXR1000 is considerably faster, but it gets to a point well into three figures, that you can't use all the performance on the road.....

Wonder if the mazda 6 you encountered might have had some BBR tweaking:

BBR’s Phase 1 upgrade boosts power to 219bhp for the top 2.2 models, and includes a custom ECU re-map and calibration on the company’s in-house chassis dynomometer. The basic price is £499, with the option of a DIY ProEcu programming kit for £599.

Replacing the standard turbo with a new modified hybrid unit, as well as the addition of a free flowing air filter as well as a further ECU remap constitutes the Phase 2 upgrade, and increases power of the 2.2-litre diesel engine by 62bhp – making a total of 243bhp. The huge increase in torque, swelling to 392lb ft, eclipses that of the 280lb ft 3 MPS model. The upgrade can be supplied for £1199, or fitted by BBR at £1499.

Not really come a cropper against anything so far, albeit was very surprised that I couldn't put meaningful distance between myself and my mate's Mini GP in a straight line - before he then left me for dead on the twisties...

did not notice as I wasn't paying it any attention - I am pretty sure I saw a "sport" badge on the back

all I know is that it was faster than I thought and I had to use every rev I had to get passed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They only made the MPS of the mk1 Mazda6. So you'd be looking at a car at least six years old.

Yes but the other way round, I had loan of a Yaris when mine was in garage getting sorted.

The number of 320 BMW's fiestas, celica's etc that got upset not being able to keep up on windy forest roads etc.

Then when you got to a straight stretch you could floor it and would go some.

Admittedly anything like a golf GTI, focus st and above was not worth playing with lol.

It was manly done up with stuff from Fensport and blitz etc, nicely lowered as well.

You could do the back road run from Stives to A1m without lifting while keeping it at 60.

Mainly used to surprise reps in Passats, mondeos etc, they would see a Yaris badge and expect to over take easily lol.

Not as yet, but it will happen i'm sure!

The trouble is, you don't know what is re-mapped and what is not.

Like Nick said, the 2.2 engine is really quite good.
I think it's the same engine they use in various Fords, Jags and Land Rovers?

What we envisage as performance gains on paper are very different on the road. I found myself in a bit of a "drive off" with an E46 M3 Coupe on Friday evening. No doubt his car is considerably quicker in every way than my company 320d, but with a quicker gearbox and newer chassis technology the gaps weren't as large as I expected. He could certainly position the car with ease when entering corners and exiting roundabouts but the in-gear acceleration wasn't making huge gaps between us. Or at least as large as I expected.

Same with my friend's 335d E90 and his previous X5 4,4V8.

It seems you need a huge power differential to visually see performance variation on the road.

I'm sure someone will now accuse me of thinking my repmobile is an M3 basher or that he wasn't trying.

Ha, just edited as i did not read the whole thread.... Egg on my face!

I used to have a 320d 184 and got wet on by far slower cars than an E46 M3, so your assumtion is right, I would wonder if he was even trying.

On my commute there are a few roundabouts with lights that are used by chancers with quick cars to leapfrog a few cars by using the wrong lanes... You can usually tell when that's what someone is going to do.
Anyway one day I was in the Z4 and could tell the 5 series was going to try and pull a fast one. So knocked it in to sport and was ready for the lights....Anyways it turns out it wasn't a 520d like most, but a 535d and I got spanked! Only realised when he beat me to the filter in to one lane that he had a the dual exit exhaust.

Roll on a month later and what should happen but almost exact same situation! Looks like he does the same thing every day.... Except that day I have the 335d.

I'm guessing he doesn't get beat too often by a hearse, and he certainly had no sense of humour about it! Made me smile though!

one of my mates has an Old Mini 30 that looks pretty standard but has a hidden secret. He catches out plenty of people who "TRY" to hammer past him on the roads. he especially loves to pee of AMG and M drivers. his favourate target is Scooby drivers. None of them ever get past him.

just because a car looks standard doesn't mean to say it is.

I love these type of sleeper cars.

P.S. my mates Mini 30 is lightened and has a tuned 2.0 Type R engine in the back. 0-60 in sub 4 seconds.

I know of a Ford Granada (the old brick shaped one) that runs 9 second quarter miles. The only give away is slightly wider rear wheels.

Funny the OP mentions this - I also had a Mazda 6 sport behind me whilst going on holiday at Easter. I had a real job pulling away from him although I was 4 up and a boot full of luggage. Very surprising, and annoying. Maybe it was remapped, dunno.

I had a top of the range Mazda 6 2.2 Sport before my 330D. No comparison at all - the 330D is massively quicker through all gears. I'd suggest whatever you've been up against has been fettled somehow...

Alternatively, you could take it out of Eco pro mode

Slap it in sports / sports + and lever to the left.

You won't feel so bad then

Speaking as someone whom back in 2008 had a limited edition Leon FR550, I give a nod to all FR drivers. The Leon / Exeo is what you get if you are in the know and don't want to be an A3/Golf, Passat/A4 kind of guy.

Had the Leon remapped too. Lovely car, cost me my license for 6 months for totting up. Now I know they are not in exactly the same class But I maintain to this day it was a better drive than the C class I had after it.

The FR stands for fookin rapid.

(Not really, it's Formula Racing I believe.)

I had a Leon FR before my current 3 series and I agree they sit below the radar, would be quicker than my car.
