39,400 km and no coolant warning. Although I've never checked the levels... maybe I should do that lol

No coolant loss since November (when I had a low-coolant warning and took her in). I think they just under-filled the cars at the factory.

Took my car in and they are telling me the problem was that there was an air bubble in the system. This air bubble caused pressure to increase and was causing pressure to be released along with coolant.
Not sure if I buy that, I've lost a half gallon of coolant in a year. Anyone heard of this before?

i don't buy that. i'd bet an air bubble would damage a radiator cap or radiator/coolant hose before it just lets coolant evaporate past the cap. coolant shouldn't evaporate to begin with, that means it's NOT building up enough pressure to raise the boiling temp of the fluid.

I still haven't gotten the car back because they are doing more testing but if I continue to lose coolant, I'll just bring it back. I plan on buying this car and for sure don't want a car that losses half a gallon of coolant in a year.

what safety valve are they referring to? i've never heard of that. pressure should only vent from the cap.

I take a look at the coolant this morning before heading to work and guess what, its about an inch over max now. So all they did was overfill the car... Should I remove some or should I be fine?

it's probably fine but keep an eye on it. it's easy to overfill it if you top it up while the engine is still warm. i've done that on a couple of my cars and it's kind of like engine oil. better to have too much than too little.

iDrive warned me today that coolant was low. I opened the cap once the car cooled down (approx. 2-3 hours) and the reservoir looked to be completely empty. Car has about 13k miles and this is the first time I'm looking into the coolant being low. |

Its been about 3 months and I'm a little below max now. Once it hits min I'll take it back and show them that they overfilled it by about half a inch and its down to min in 3-4 months, 2,000ish miles

8200mi just checked, no warning but was 20oz low, refilled cold we'll see. I also have a whine that sounds like alternator whine worst 1800-2000 noticable in the cabin stopped or at any speed.

Had to add 0.15 gal in the main expansion tank after low coolant alert on Idrive, at 12k miles.
Now keeping an eye on it. Never had to do this before in any car (unless there was clear evidence of leaking). My B58 is still under warranty. BMW told me coolant consumption could come from Turbocharger, they gonna replace it in two weeks. I have my doubts it will solve the problem. But would they simply replace a 4000$ part without being sure??? |

hi insanecoder... I am curious about this; should I be concerned my 2017 340 was produced prior to 8/2017 and is a South Africa Build.... My coolant is fine so far... Why would I be concerned about where the car was made or year and month? as I dont see anything stating a recall unless I am not looking in the right place. Thanks.

I think i'm going to check mine now (at 1500mi) and monitor it over the next couple months to see if it's getting lower and by how much. I just took delivery 2 months ago and haven't peeked at the coolant levels yet.

Can someone please describe the complete procedure to check the coolant levels on the B48 Engine. I am still confused with the 2 different reservoirs and the levels they should be and where to actually add the coolant if it is low or if both reservoirs are low... Thank you.

As far as I know, the circuits are totally separated from each other. So they need to be checked and topped off seperately. The water level must be checked when motor is cold, level should be between min & max. Although there is only a small gap between min and max.
