BMW gets to re-use its investment in the F3x platform to churn out more permutations and thereby recoup their upfront investment (and some). Consumers who want a BMW in this form factor get one and based on the 4 Series it's bound to be great.

If the 4GC or 6GC make no sense to you then you're right and BMW has an alternate model for you. If it does, then you're just the target audience BMW hopes to retain (or attract) from Audi/Mercedes.

Would I buy one, yes ...

I agree. people that don't like the M6 or M4 Gran Coupe can get an M5 or an M3 sedan. Personally.. While I am in the market for none of them.. I think the M6 gran coupe looks badass and far better than the M5 actually. I imagine the same will ocurr with the M4 GC... and if they bring out an M2 GC.. then i will be in the market for that.

For those of you saying there's no point...

More options = more sales. Introducing this model (or any model we all don't really care for) will never decrease BMW sales but if anything add more sales.

Maybe means more or better M products for us? Who knows. I'd be interested in an M4GC...

Still waiting on a z4 sedan, or I guess a z5 it would be called, then the z5 GC plus M variant. Next we will see GC verts. You would think that making 10 million different models/variants would spread your engineers and design teams thin, possibly leading to a qauntity over quality scenario. Dealerships will have to expand just to keep all these different models/variants on the lot. But alas if they turn a profit, they will be churned out.

I agree :-) If you read the whole thread, you'll find that this is basically a better version of the 3 series. It looks better from the rear and potentially can be more useful if the trunk has a larger opening.

When I was complaining that this is redundant, I didn't mean the 4 series gran coupe is a bad vehicle. It simply makes the 3 series obsolete to me. When I bought my car, I was looking for the smallest possible 4 door BMW, and at the time (one year ago), that was the F30 3 series.

It simply makes no sense to me to make a better version without eliminating the 3 series from the market. At least in the USA, where the price difference will not be that great ($2-$3k), given the same engine and interior choices.

110% agree, this is so stupid BMW. Might as well make a 3 series coupe while you're at it. Oh wait...

The 4GC looks great and i think the car would have made a lot of sense IF it had a different interior compared to the 3 series: It would have been just another car (bigger than the 3), more coupé-like, less practical but still a 4door. Just like 5 vs 6GC, they're just 2 different models.
With the e92 (3 series coupe) BMW launched a new exterior colour (space grey) that wasn't available on the sedan until the LCI..so e90 and e92 had different options for interior and exterior..
I think where BMW f..d up is when it used the same interior with the same materials and same colour options (inside and out) than the 3 and still market it as a "new" segment....
THIS IS the decision that would cannibalise F30 sales instead of opening a new niche market BECAUSE the 4gc IS JUST A 3series BUT BETTER LOOKING!
The business logic behind it is completely insane!

...AND what's even more mind boggling , is that the investment to have a different interior and feel, would have been very very small compared to creating external panels.
All that was needed, is some small changes in details :different design for the trim finishers, radio or vent surrounds, different stitching and colour for seats...higher quality finish (full leather option for dashboard)...
New colours for the exterior..
And this would have made someone buying into a 4 series (coupe, convertible or GC) feel slightly more special AND anyone that's out there buying a BMW would take all these factors into consideration (colour, finish, options), instead of getting lost at figuring out the differences between a 4 and a 3, and which to buy.

This is really annoying us as BMW fans. They first kill the 3 series coupe with ridiculous reason of 3 series being 4 doors and 4 series being 2 doors. And now they put another 2 doors to the 4?!

We really want the 3 series to have both Sedan and Coupe as before and the 4 series deserves to be a significantly different car!

Talking about choices, why don’t they leave the legendary 3 Series/M3 coupe alone and make a more distinguished 4 series. They can then put as many doors as they want to the 4? BMW should not be so lazy on the design but still want to get our hard earned money!

Is it just me or does the trunk look like it's too high from the side? Or maybe it's just the angle that the rear shots are taken from?

A 4er Gran Coupe makes perfect sense especially in today's market .
A customer would like a Coupe but finds it impractical ahead of family and business requirements.

A four dr Coupe is the perfect compromise , sporting elegance , dynamic performance and of course more flexibility.

There is now a significant customer base who are looking for a more sporting concept but with better practicality.
These models are especially growing in sales as a more exclusive choice against a Coupe or even an established sedan.

Just come out with a four door 2 series with decent steering feel and I will be happy. Not everyone wants to drive a giant whale. I think bmw has come a long way from the original concept of the small sports sedan. If that is what sells, then I don't blame them for moving in that direction. It's just not my cup of tea.

I think VW already proved the concept with its Passat/CC variants.
It isn't really that hard to grasp that if BMW only offered the 4GC there would be plenty of complaints from those who need more room for rear seat passengers. Besides the 4GC offers those Bimmerangs! Lol.
