Changing from Runflats to non-flats is a better change than the ACS springs...
... So says my wife!
She couldn't tell the difference when the springs were changed, which was mainly a good thing, as meant the ride was no worse, but then she had no appreciation of the change it made to the handling, so she thought it was a waste of money! Thankfully she understands that it made a huge difference to me. Anyways, this week she said the way the car drove now was noticeably better. She said it was quieter and that the bumps felt softer, and the car felt "faster"! Result! My view is that she is completely right of course. I'd go further and say that steering feel is improved, any hint of understeer has been neutralised, to such an extent that I feel the car is much more throttle adjustable if you're in sport+ (or sport drivetrain anyway). The ride is so good that I now spend all of my time is sports mode, and if not just on the motorway or stop start traffic then I'm sports+ mode. I'd say that anyone who has bothered to do the ACS springs and found them worthwhile really should do this too, and they would have themselves the car they envisioned when they bought it.

Excellent news. Sounds like a very worthwhile mod, and effectively free.
i will be interested to know if they wear faster than the runflats they replaced. |

What's the consensus on spare tyres when the RFTs are removed? Space saver?, tyre gunk, AA retrieve?

I may look in to a space saver for when overseas or something. I will stick with runflats on my winter set as makes sense not to be faffing around at the side of the road in winter.

I don't understand all this worry of getting punctures, I've had one proper puncture in my 15 years of driving! To use tyre gunk or wait for the RAC once every 15 years really would not bother me one bit!!

I'd guess the cost of instant mobility when you get a puncture with go-flats escalates on newer cars with TPMS? Doesn't the gunk destroy the clever vale?

Good point, don't know if it can be used with TPMS. But then if we didn't have RFT's we wouldn't need TPMS!

What "worry" do you detect with folk?
Agreed, it's not particularly common- I've had 3 in just over 20 years motoring. It wouldn't be a reason to stay with runflats on its own for me, but you still need to consider what your plan is if you do have a puncture.

That absolutely depends on your own company so give them a ring first. When I changed to non run flats on my old E90 I contacted Direct Line and they noted it but were not fussed. But other insurance companies may be different - best to check.

I wonder how often spare tyres are checked by most people? How does BMW assist deal with punctures when using non run flats? Standard tyres would give great choice as well. |
