I'm sure he'll answer, but I think 2012's were all "i"s and I tihnk he might have meant "AT" instead of "at"...

There are so many variables that can affect performance tests, I'm guessing a mfr is better off being as conservative as possible and advertise performance numbers that can be attained by the majority of drivers under a wide range of conditions.

Motor Trend achieved a 4.7 sec 0-60 with the 335i 8AT in this review:

And they pulled off 4.9 seconds with 335i 6MT in the S4 comparison, but I think there is something whacky with that car because the braking distance was 20% longer (131ft vs 109ft) than the video above, perhaps attributable to all season tires vs summer tires:

I think a 335i xDrive with summer tires and an M Sport package would have made a big difference here. Still a good couple of videos.

Auto.

Sport+ with paddle shift mode.

Smooth Road (Tar) Gravel causes to much resistance

AC Off (lol just to make it accurate)

1. Make sure the car is nice and hot, oil temp around 250F

2. Tires have to be warm

3. Hold in 1st gear rev just a little, Release and slam enough to wear the tires wont spin i like to call this (Torque Hold) Right before it hits Red shift if you dont the car will jump because the car has a safety mechanism to protect the engine.

4. You may not get it the first time it took me 3. You will learn how to launch better in each run

Tech Specs.

BP 93 Octane Gas

Castrol Titanium 5w-30 (Highest Performance oil) Better than what BMW recommends.

Happy Testing I wil be posting a video in a few days

I wonder if you can do something similar to this in a manual... Or would you destroy the clutch

HELL NO!!! lmaooo, I think of you're an expert manual shifter its possible to get a better time the only way to do it is not to loose any power during the shift.

Well se if you do that the car might jump so if you where to you'd need to apply the gas very quickly.

I think those days are over. Traction and intelligent AT are leading the pack now...

I put about 60 miles on a F30 328xi sport w/paddle shifters, and purchased a 2011 328i 6MT. Maybe the F30 felt marginally faster.....my clutch skill is average at best (been driving trucks, Volvos and Subies most of my life, all 4 and 5 speeds, nothing like a real performance tranny) so I am sure this factored into it. Compared to the 328xi I nearly purchased though, the 2013 F30 version is much, much more aggressive, both in shifting and hitting torque at a low RPM. Easily felt 15% faster than the E90 version.

I ended up going with the E90 328i 6MT because I felt it was equivalent in performance, more fun to drive, and nearly $20k cheaper!

I wonder if I am the only one who feels that way?

To answer the performance claims from BMW vs. Mags.

BMW's tests would be carried out strictly to set standards (TUV), so will be carrying a set amount of fuel and ballast weights to meet the requirement. Car mags don't follow that regime. Take 30-40 kilo's out of the car and yes it will hit 60 faster. Test on a drag strip rather than a virgin piece of tarmac and again you'll be faster. Not apples with apples, but it is if you want to compare a German manufacturer A vs. B official figures, which is the important comparison.

An F30 has insufficient power for this to be an issue. Even with run flats and a MT it is a challenge to get anything other than a cute chirp from the tires. Especially with an MT, all one need do to get maximum acceleration is to hold the brake, increase the revs, release the brake and floor the foot feed. Brainless.
Have you ever driven a MT?
Even in a 116i loaner the tires will lose a lot of traction if pushing too much revs at launch. And it has only 122 hp
