Trunk opening randomly?
Does anyone else have a trunk that pops open randomly after you've parked and locked the car?
Mine is a new 2018 440i and it does this every so often. Quite annoying and worrisome. |

Do you have the kick open trunk? Sometimes happens in my garage when I walk beside the car but only when I have the key fob with me.

Yep. Sometimes I park in the garage and lock up, only to come downstairs in the morning and my trunk is open. No clue.

Keys in the pocket have done it on mine... kneeling or whatever and it pushes the button!

Unless it's a result of an inadvertent press of a button, a visit to the dealer will fix the problem. These problems are very difficult to diagnose. The service department will simply replace parts likely play a part in the root cause.

Happened to me during a heavy rain storm.. had quite the puddle accumulate back there. Mine was a self inflicted problem though - turns out i was leaning against my desk and the key fob button would get pressed. My office is close enough to my car where it popped my trunk.
Are you sure you're not hitting the trunk release button on the key fob without realizing? |

My trunk has opened on some occasions but all of them were when my key fob was in my pocket at the time. Pretty sure I somehow pressed the trunk open button somehow... my recommendation is to get a key case cover.

Pretty sure it's related to kick to open feature, I have had it happen and have the key case, for certain the button wasn't pressed. I've seen the warning lights flash prior to open which only happens with kick to open.

I had this issue and started to use a faraday pouch to put my keys in. Added security as I have comfort access and no more random trunk opening. Otherwise pretty sure the remote was being pressed in my pocket/ the sensor was sensitive as I walked past.

If you have any cats or raccoons or large rats in the garage and they walk by the car it might trigger the trunk to open. Or there might be a TSB for this issue

There is no hardware faults (or at least nothing to note right now in PUmA) but there is an updated I-Level integration update that maybe tweaks the sensitivity. Of course this is assuming you're not accidentally pressing the trunk release button on your remote.

I have a 2018 440i and it has happened to me a couple times but I think it's from not closing it all the way. One time it happened while I was walking away from the car and another time it happened when i started reversing, it popped back open.
I saw another thread where people said their trunk didn't pop open very quickly where as mine shoots up and feels like it's going to come off the hinges. I have a dorky method of closing it so I don't drag my hand on the paint, but using the interior trim to swing it closed doesn't give a lot of leverage and the spring that pushes it open has a lot of resistance. |
