Another vote for this. Another cost-saving maneuver. So far, many reviewers have raved about the F10's new front suspension.

Inline 6 twin turbo, ftw! Hopefully this will be in my budget range.

So is this car going to have their new electric steering that is devoid of road feel?

And the day they kill the NA I6 motor will be a sad day in the history of their brand.

Seeing as that to sell cars in the U.S. automakers have average 41.4 mpg across their fleet, I'm expecting them to bring some I4's here.

And I don't give a crap if it's a 250hp 2.0t. I wouldn't buy it. It will never sound like a I6 and it will never ever be as smooth.

I have a feeling they will use larger turbos on the N54-N55. Probably a little more displacement too.

Remember, BMW did not go with twins on a 6 since the 70's. The story is they got such great results in power they actually ended up using a smaller turbo than they originally planned with the 335i. They did not want to screw their future line up and have the 3 series putting down more power than their top models. Hence the tiny turbos and detune many people are rapidly unlocking.

I think that breakthrough changed their plans for the next 10 years in r&d. This is why the N54 is rapidly becoming so popular in the mod and tuner crowd. I personally think we have not seen what these motors are really capable of. Kind of reminds of the 93-98 Supras. Toyota was way ahead of the competition and way ahead of themselves at the time. That effected their future line up of performance.

That is why they are bringing in the 4 on the 3 series. The N54 motor is more series than they originally thought.

Go with larger displacement...bigger turbos...go with some larger and better designed fuel pumps and injectors. You may have a winner!

Leave the V-8 twins for the M5 ect...which will be pretty sick!

No M3 sedan? Seriously BMW? With others like the RS4, C63, and even XFR competing for business, why would they not make an M3 sedan? Makes no sense to me.

Ha! I wish that were the case. I don't see how you can bolt on turbos, intercoolers, direct injection, and all the associated plumbing and not raise the cost and weight.

This motor will be much more complex than the current motor and that fits nicely in line with BMW's pricing strategy of raising the starting price 15% on each new generation. I'm guessing the price is going to be hard to swallow.

At least Audi realized that no one was going to buy an S4 starting at $56k when the M3 starts at the same price and dropped it to $48k. I don't think BMW's people are wise enough to figure that no one is going to pay $65k for a base M3.

Oh well, if BMW really bungles this next product cycle they're surely going to hear about it from, hmmm, the entire automotive community. I'm sure there are more than a few companies in line for the schadenfreude.

I for one understand- the E46 M3 did not offer a sedan and after seeing the E90 M3 I can see why...

The M3 will always look better as a beefed up coupe rather than a 4dr IMHO....

As for Audi, I say each to his own taste. No need to knock on them and say "geez if you're gonna leave BMW at least get a Porsche." I know people who have traded in their 996's for the new S5 and Turbo's for the R8... Just sayin'......

Anyways, let's just hope that making all these niche models isn't pushing BMW out of the enthusiast realm.......

252Hp 2.0L engine? What happened to the 335? Where's the 300+ HP engine we all know and love. This article is suspect.

The turbo I6 will still be available. The turbo I4 is going to replace the N/A I6, thereby completing BMW's transition to an all-turbo product lineup.

But yeah, I agree there is plenty in the article that sounds like bunk. The turbo I4 is a reality though.

EXACTLY what I was thinking! What other cars are compared to M3's in that segment? The e90 M3 is my favorite BMW to date

I love BMW and progress - but I think I should probably run out and buy an M3 with a naturally aspirated V8 and hang on to it forever

When the turbo I4 does come out, I would like to see a thorough, head to head comparison in fuel economy between that motor and the outgoing NA 3.0l I6. I'm willing to bet that the added cost, complexity, and decreased longevity of the engine will give less than a 5% increase in fuel economy. As much as I'd like to believe that a turbo I4 will increase fuel economy over the I6 I just haven't seen any car in which engines with comparable power outputs and different cylinder counts have any noticeable difference in fuel economy.

And you have to live with that horrible buzzing noise coming from the engine bay. Not pleasant.

You might just be Jim, for starters do you really even know what the net effect of that is? Not talking about how different they look, but why one vs the other?
1. For st your E9x does not have enough suspension travel to really make an appreciatble difference. The wishbone allows large verticle movements without a change to the camber of the wheel. The travel arc means that the contact path will change somewhat though as the wheel moves up or down. - you loose almost nothing.
2. Wishbone means a lower hood is archievable, but seeing as to the minimum hood height laws have changed and a higher hoodline is mandated, thanks to improved pedestrian safety, this was done probably for the extra space in leads to in hood. If you want a V engine, more space is good. Your E9X will not have any Vs in the range. - you loose nothing.
3. Wishbone is costs more to manufacture and more joints mean the subframe costs more too. - You gain in the cost department staying with struts

In the final analysis, its much to do about nothing really. New not necessarily better. Wishbone not superior, just different and better for cars with V8s in their lineup.
