I pick my new car Monday and I mentioned the steering vibrations issue. The shop foreman said that he hadn't heard of any issues at either dealership (Erhard BMW in Michigan) and he searched the BMW database and found no mention of it. He promised to drive my car when it comes in.

the second part.. well, i guess he COULD be telling the truth.. but if BMW documents anything, he would have found a reference to it as multiple people on this board have brought it in for that problem.

We still need to know if any cars built from march 2012 have this issue, as the part numbers for the steering changed so there may have been a fix incorporated for something.

Okay, my F30 328i Sport 6MT has 700+ miles on it now. It was an early March 2012 production. There was minimal vibration of the steering wheel at 40 - 60 mph when I took delivery. However, it is a LOT more apparent now. The car also is pulling to the right Anyone have a fix or service bulletin for this? |

Guys, Half of you hit pot holes and have a balance/alignment issue... NOT the issue the OP and previous posts have discussed. Go read up boys and girls because most of these issues are a real quick fix for less than 100 bucks.
As for those who DO have the phantom shake, from what I heard it could be the electronic steering being calibrated 'too well', similarly to the way that the ECU on the diesels has them throwing CELs all the time for no real reason. The measurements may be too precise and so they need to just be slightly less touchy and allow for the slightest amount of play in the wheel to fix the problem. Thats not a BMW based answer but if you look into it, that seems like the most likely source of the problem because it isn't a feedback feeling, its created in the wheel itself.

I don't have these problems. 328i Sport with sport transmission (paddle shifters) and variable steering.
What I have heard is a buzzing from the engine when it changes gears. I suppose this is just how the new engine sounds. The steering wheel itself is solid, no vibrations. |

Steering wheel vibration
This is my first post. I understand there are several posts regarding steering wheel vibrations at different speeds. With less than 1000 miles the dealership balanced the four tires and re-aligned the car due to an off-center steering wheel. This did not solve the problem. The vibration is slight but if you let go of the wheel you can clearly see it moving; substantially less noticeable in sports mode.
I believe it is steering wheel feedback but in a car like this it should not be happening. My 128i and Minis did not have this type of problem. I just wanted to hear if anybody has made any progress with this topic. I am taking it back to the dealership next week. Thank you. |

I have the exact same problem. It's a minor annoyance, but not acceptable in a car of this class.
I'm taking it in to the dealer on Wednesday. I'll see if they'll have something more to offer than balancing tires... I'm hopeful BMW engineers will eventually come up with a solution. |

I test drove a 328i sport a couple of days ago.
It too had a slight vibration in the steering wheel. It was very slight vibe though. I took my hands slightly off the wheel and saw the steering wheel oscillating left to right, but not much. To me it felt like my 135i with Conti tires when I first drive it from cold. In my 135i it comes from the tires. After about less than 5 minutes, the tires warm up and the vibes stop. But in the 328i it never stopped. I guess this is what people are describing, but some with much stronger vibration? |

I just picked up my car Friday and it has a vibration between 40-60. If I put my hands on the wheel you can't feel it though. It's just when your hands aren't on the wheel you can see it shake.

Talked to me dealer's "Service" Mangler today. He told me that he "thought" that BMW was working on a software update but it could be 3,6 or 9 months down the road. It was over a month since I had talked to them last.

Thank you very much for the feedback. RPM90 described the issue accurately. My car has Contis but the condition does not improve when the tires heat up. I will keep monitoring the posts for updates.
