I was reading some Hero5 articles, they have a new "linear" mode to eliminate fisheye.

Interesting, that makes sense

I wish the Karma was just a bit more portable (I.e. Not require a dedicated case) otherwise I would have gotten that.

I prefer the Karma due to the dual use of being able to take off the hero and shoot on the stabilizer or any other go pro mounts. If you are shooting for production that carries a lot more utility than have a slightly smaller drone.

Size wise I never even had a real problem with the Phantom 4 since I don't see myself needing a smaller carrying case than the one DJI makes. Everything fits in one backpack... why do I need a drone that would fit in a satchel?

I travel often for work and would love to bring my drone with me to get some shots. However, my Phantom requires me to carry an additional piece of luggage. For a 3 day work trip I am not checking a bag, so the utility of being able to put the Mavic into my backpack along with my laptops, etc is huge.

I've found myself countless times in situations where I'd love to bring the Drone with me, but the size has prohibited me from doing that.

I would liken it to a DSLR vs Mirrorless camera. I loved my DSLR, but sold it to get a nice mirrorless camera because of the size/portability. Best decision I could have made.

Seems pretty simple, if size matters most for someone, the Mavic is the answer. For someone like me, who is into photography, but not so much cinematography, the Karma gives me a complete system of sorts so that even with mediocre editing skills/software, i can make a nice looking video.

I would likely use it most for mtn biking. Sure the drone makes for nice intro and ending shots as well as shots of other riders or train parks. But the meat of the film will be taken on a very bumpy mtn bike. Modular gamble wins out by a HUGE margin in terms of finished video product.

Casey said it best, it's exciting to see where this tech is headed. GoPro, with it's "obsolete" Karma may have changed this tech segment for the better. Every bit as much as DJI with ti's Mavic.

Which drones are able to handle the weight of a "gopro-like" action cam? I dont own any gopros, but have backed the new Revl action cams coming out in December.

It's not just the weight. It's the gimbal being tuned to the exact camera. Even if the camera weighs the same the balance could be off. This is why I like that dji is making its own cameras now so they can balance and fine tune the gimbal/camera combo.

The Revl action cams have a built-in gimbal.

Picked up the phantom 4 before either of these two were announced. Looking at the specs I'd still prefer it. Higher top speed, longer battery life. Portability doesn't bother me much. I already delivered a 12oz can of beer to a friend out on the boat with it. Wouldn't feel too comfortable doing that with a smaller drone.

1 extra minute of battery life is really a moot point in my opinion.

Top speed - 5mph difference is not massive, but where the Mavic really shines is the fact that it can go top speed and the blades never touch the frame. Phantom 4 you will get the blades in the frame every time, unless you angle the camera down (not ideal for certain shots).

I am sure portability isn't a concern for many, for me its HUGE. Just got back from a trip to SF and lugged around the Phantom 3 in addition to my other backpack/luggage. Would have killed to throw the Mavic in my main backpack and be done with it.

Beer delivery I can get behind though!

Update- got my Mavic on Friday of last week. It is absolutely fantastic. If you are on the fence, just get the Mavic, you won't be disappointed.

Quick video with the plastic dome on. That's why there's tons of reflection at the end. Almost crashed it already once, but overall super fun and awesome. I also got to see a Karma drone. That thing is laughable in comparison. Hand gimbal is nice tho.
