Sport mode vs. gear-lever to the left

Can anyone explain the difference in auto transmission behaviour between Sport mode (drivetrain only) and sticking the gear-lever to the left?
And what happens to the auto transmission when you engage both together?
Thanks

Sports mode shift between 3000-3500 rpm
Lever to left with no input between 3500 to 5000 rpm

Sport mode much smoother
Shifter to the left a bit more harsh

I suggest sport for hearing the exhaust and daily driving with some extra power
Shift to the left if your drag racing

I'm fairly sure (99%) in sport mine changes up at 7000rpm.I dont often use the stick to the left mode but if memory serves correctly its a bit more snappy in changes.

That's only if you put the lever to the left and then shift manually. It than stays in the selected gear as long as possible.
Without shifting manually, the gear shifting points are going to be a bit later than in normal driving mode. (later upshifting, sooner downshifting to be precise)
And with lever in left postition from a standstill car takes of in 1st gear instead of 2nd gear (as in normal mode)

That's because you have a 35i. On the 40i, Sport and Sport+ actually adjust the shift points higher and will hold the gear longer than usual even if the gear stick is left to the right. The main difference between D and S on the gear stick is that the shifts are much more aggressive on S.

Yeah I'm certain as I've just checked that in sport the car upshifts at 7000 rpm with the stick to the right.

I was not aware it pulled away in 2nd gear normally.
