...I'm an actual BMW enthusiast and I can't even keep them all straight (does the M235i have 704 suspension or M-performance?, M-sport 328xi has base suspension, etc). The casual car buyer must be confused out of their minds.

Um, I'm sure the casual car buyer could give a crap less about all those things you listed. The casual buyer probably has never even heard of the 704 or of port installed options and so has no clue.

The casual buyer doesn't see an M235 go down the road and spit on the ground that it's a "fake" //M car.

Those are all enthusiast based concerns/issues.......LOL
