You know you're old when you can remember:-
Being able to unlock car doors with a coat hanger Being able to buy part-worn tyres Going to the scrapyard and unbolting bits from car wrecks stacked 5 high Looking at yor licence and realising you can tow a 7.5 ton trailer off the back of a 7.5 ton lorry. Crashing before you've got a licence and blagging a producer with your best mates documents |

It was still bad enough in the early 1970's when I was in the motor trade. The garage I worked for ran 24/7 recovery, the wrecks (after a weekend) we had back in our yard made you feel sick, just to look at them. Then we heard the details from the recovery drivers. Not nice. |

Remember getting your first colour TV.
Snake belts Oxfords High waisters Using a strobe gun Bump starting cars on cold mornings. You remember when front seat belts where not required by law. When music cassettes where the must have. I used to be able to get past Moss alarms. Remembering when discs brakes became common rather than just drums. When shooting tramps was allowed. |

While pumping petrol I had to offer the drives Green Shield stamps or a 5p per gallon discount. Both were only paid on full gallons. All that before spread sheets. I don't know how I coped. Let's no get started on two shots of REDEX.

Yes, the debates on the benefits of Redex, in the context of does it reduce the need for a 'decarb'.
Nothing much has changed, now it is debates on fuel quality and fuel additives. Better add another, "You know you are old ..." When you remember the regular need for a decarb. |

Yeah, I'm in my rocking chair. Between dozing off to sleep, I'm reminiscing about "the good old days". As to aqua-jets. Were a design feature of Dunlop's early radial tyre. Design of the tread on the SP Sport had small ducts coming out of the tread blocks, designed to shoot water out like a jet of water, hence the name Aquajet. Sort of pumped the water out to the sides, as the tyre rotated and was distorted on the road surface. Had them on my Triumph Dolomite Sprint. They were a devil to balance. Here's a link to a bit of the history. http://vintagetyretalk.blogspot.co.u...tyre-icon.html |

Farthings.
I remember my mum having a small stack of farthings (a quarter of an old penny) on the mantelpiece. When the bread man came round I had to run out to get a loaf and it cost 'tenpence farthing', (10.25d). About 4.5p in modern money !

Sadly I remember most of those. I also remember very badly equipped BMWs - on my first (E30 318 iS run out model) I took it straight from dealer to an audio electric outfit for a stereo and remote alarm system - an additional £650 quid!
Some things are back in fashion though - my first car was a mark 1 rwd Vauxhall Cavalier, white with red interior and half red dash..... the rostyle wheels (13"!) with trim rings and velour seat material probably will never make a comeback though...
