Standing Up Windshield Wipers For Snow
Hello everyone,
I drive a 2016 428xi Gran Coupé and I live in Calgary, Alberta. It snows quite a bit here during the winter and my car lives outside. With my previous cars, I was able to put the windshield wipers up when the weather forecast said it was going to snow overnight or the next day, but this is my first BMW and its hood actually extends so far over the windshield wiper arms that I can't put them up. When I try to raise them they just hit the top of the hood after about 15° angle. Do you guys know of any way around this? I've been thinking of putting cloth (like a small towel) under each wiper when it's going to snow, so that the wiper doesn't freeze onto the windshield (that's what kills the rubber every winter), but I'd still much prefer just erecting them instead. Thanks, BartMan |

Welcome!
1. Switch off the ignition 2. Ensure wipers will move and are not stuck to the windshield 3. Press wiper lever UP beyond the point of resistance and HOLD for 3 seconds The wipers will then move to a vertical position so you can pull them up. |

So I tried it but it didn't work. Drove my car for awhile, parked it, shut it off, held the wiper control up past point of most resistance (you know, the little final click past the smooth resistance), for several seconds, but they just kept wiping, never staying upright. Do I have to turn the car off, then back on, then off again and then do the wiper thing?

It's funny, in my F10, they just move from their resting position to the "up" position and stop. In my F32, they give one full wipe (all the way across then back down) then back to the "up" position and stop.

Not just the engine off, but everything off ( 2 presses after driving ) Try it again when you go to your locked car. Unlock it, press the start/stop without pressing the brake to switch the electronics on. then press it again without the brake to switch them off again. Then hold the wiper stalk up past the resistance.

You won't be the first or last. Sometimes I get it wrong and have to switch on and off again, to trigger the lift up. |

OP - as E90Fleet said, make sure your car is completely OFF (2 presses). I'll bet that's your problem.

IT WORKED! Two presses to shut everything off and then hold up the wiper control for 3 seconds and the wipers do one full wipe and then they go vertical and stay there.
Awesome thanks so much! This forum has made me love my car twice as much already! |
