So my car got updated at the dealer today - the lights definitely flicker if they're not coded. Felt like a moron the whole drive home

Think there are two separate aspects of LEDs flickering:

• First, if LED bulb does not have resistor (built in or hooked in), the bulb will flicker -- think that has to do with normal variations in current (which for incandescent bulb would merely be a variation in intensity). The WeissLicht bulbs overcome this problem.
• Second, BMWs have two built-in diagnostics to check whether the bulb is working: cold (at start up); and warm (periodically, think it is every 5 minutes). If the car gets nothing back, then there is an error code or something to indicate a bad bulb.

For the first, getting error-free bulbs will be the cure; while coding is the only way to overcome the second, which you can operate the car safely with no problems (I know I did for a couple of weeks).

Hope that helps!

Those are already LED, and I don't think they can be changed. They're meant to be running lights anyways. Otherwise it'll look like you're on the brakes the whole time.

I know, I coded the second I got home (well, tried to. Turned out the OSX update broke vmware fusion and had to buy a new version. Then I had to update my version of esys so had to pay for that too. Most expensive warranty trip to the shop I've ever had)

You could have tried this without paying for the e-sys upgrade:

I just coded my rear turn signals and will install bulbs later today or tomorrow night.

Quick question though, is there a consensus on what values in REM to code for the break lights? A couple posts back BL_ was mentioned but it said "un-tested". I have two sets of bulbs and want to put in the break lights at the same time as turn signals.

Has anyone successfully coded the outer break lights?

Thx in advance
Has anyone determined what the coding required is for the rear brake lights?

Thank you.

I know for the F30's the inners aren't even used unless they're coded differently so that might not matter if it's the same for the F32

Right, they are only used on heavy braking so I dont intend to swap those out. Its this H21WLL outer brake bulb that I cant find an LED replacement for! I emailed bimmian and am hoping for a positive reply.

Hi - been following this thread, nice write-up. Has anyone been able to use LED's on the brake lights (H21W)? I've read things from people saying they can either overheat, or not be error free. Is the H21W also the same as "1156"?

I do plan on doing the required coding.

Would like to get some direction on available brake light LED bulbs.

BTW - I bought a set of WeissLichts (front amber turn signals) from the Bimmian group, and one of the bulbs was defective, worked for about 30 seconds and then gave me an error. The WeissLichts should be completely plug-n-play, no coding required? This was just the front turn signal. Was going to purchase the rear turn signals, but not totally sold on the quality now. Left bulb worked fine, swapped bulb positions and then the same bulb starting malfunctioning on the left side.

---------------------

EDIT: Bimmian shipped another bulb - this one was also defective. They finally shipped me a third bulb, and it worked fine and no problems since. I also purchased the rear brake (red), rear turn (amber), and rear reverse, these all worked great (with no coding). They would flicker without the coding, but they don't throw any errors.

I've left the "inner brake / rear fog" bulb as the default bulb type (non-LED).

I then completed the coding, very easy.

If anyone is curious, these are the Bimmian numbers you need from the website:
Front Turn (Amber) - WTS302FAY
Rear Turn (Amber) - WTS302RAY
Rear Brake Outer (Red) - WTS302RRY
Rear Reverse (White) - WTS302VWY

You'll need coding to disable the regular diagnostic checks the system performs. If not, the Weisslicht LED bulbs will flicker.

I have bought and return them. I don't know about quality, but reflection in my F32 was very poor. from 50 feet away they were barely visible. Big safety problem when people cannot see you turning.

On the success side, I have replaced rear turn signals with Philips brand from Amazon ($30) and they are great. Equal brightness to OEM.

Did you mean you bought the Weisslicht and returned them? Which ones did you buy?

I use the Weisslicht bulbs as brake lights as well and I have no problems

I have no problems with mine, maybe you got some bad bulbs?

You most likely have bad bulbs. I just made a video from more than 50 feet away.

I've had zero problem with the bulbs, they are incredibly bright. I actually received comments from people that they are quite blinding when behind me at a stop light.

Hopefully I won't get rear ended, ha.

Can someone please post a video of the Weisslicht out brake lights? I just installed some Horizon LEDs and I think they are not as bright as I would prefer. The turn signals like the above videos are super bright though.
