Valve cover Gasket.... CPO covered?

Hey guys,

So my 2013 335i has been experiencing this issue for a while. Basically what happens is out of nowhere, white smoke is coming out of the hood while driving. If I have the A/C or heater on, this white smoke pours in through the A/C vents. At first I thought it was condensation based of other threads on this forum but then after further investigating, and the fact that I was low on oil makes me think it's the valve cover. Based on another person experiencing the same issue, which turned out to be the valve cover gasket, I now believe it is that gasket. My car currently has close to 63,000 miles and where before it would be on and off, now I just notice it more. Like I mentioned in the title, my car is still under a CPO warranty right now and I am curious to see if anyone has gas the same experience and if maybe the CPO warranty works or should cover a valve cover gasket?

Thanks in advance!

BTW I have the Dinantronics Stage 2

Have you actually inspected the valve cover for leaks?

I spoke to my SA recently asking the same thing, my VCG has started to seep just above the exhaust manifold at 59k miles. I was told it should be covered by the CPO warranty. Have them look at your oil filter housing gasket too, mine is also starting to seep around back where it’s hard to see.

Mine was covered under CPO at the 60k mark. Goodluck! Not sure if the Dinan tune will effect it though?

Thanks for the replies guys. I made my appointment for Tuesday, going to definitely remove the Dinantronics before then. I did try to inspect where the leak was coming from but the only thing I saw was oil dripping into what I believe is the top of the exhaust.

I wouldn't even bother removing the dinantronics, don't take my word for it but that has the absolute least to do with a valve cover gasket leak.

Don't think there is any reason to remove the Dinantronics since Dinan is an authorized aftermarket vendor with their own warranty if BMW claims an issue

Bad advice. Dinan's warranty policy states two very clear things on the purchase of used vehicles:

1. Dinan Performance Products are warranted for a 2-year, unlimited mileage period from the date of original purchase.

2. This warranty does not include reimbursement for repairs to any original vehicle manufacturer’s component(s) that may have been affected by a Dinan component.

While I agree that a mild tune should have little effect on your valve cover gasket the presents of the tune could certainly make your service visit difficult. Every dealer is different in how they view aftermarket modifications. Exercising caution is the safest bet.

BTW your valve cover is covered by the CPO warranty. I had mine replaced last year due to an oil leak from the front of the engine.

White smoke is usually indicative of a coolant leak. The would mean a leaking head gasket or oil filter housing gasket not a valve cover gasket.

White smoke through the dash vents.. never heard of such a thing.

I ran into a issue with burning coolant. It passed the pressure test and there was no coolant in the oil however the N55 from 2011-2013 uses very weak head gasket bolts. When increasing the boost they loosen up over time and you're essentially lifting the head. It will cause misfires after a while and usually happens under hard acceleration (because that's when you're building boost). That was my issue.
Hope this helps and best of luck.

I stand corrected and "educated". Here's the warranty section of their site: https://www.dinancars.com/warranty/

Addtionally, they have a specific section regarding Dinantronics Sport products that read:

(Quote)
DINANTRONICS SPORT PRODUCT WARRANTY
DINANTRONICS Sport products are warranted against material and workmanship defects for a 1-year, unlimited mileage period from the date of original purchase. This warranty does not cover any consequential damages (neither parts nor labor) that may be caused as a result of the installation or use of this product. To obtain service under this warranty, Dinan tech support must be made aware of the malfunction or defect in materials and/or workmanship of the DINANTRONICS Sport module upon discovery, via an Authorized Independent Dinan Dealer or directly to Dinan during normal business hours. In the event of a valid warranty claim, Dinan will repair or replace, at its sole discretion, any defective Dinan component upon receipt of the item and proof of the original purchase in the form of a lawful invoice. In the event of a defect the defective unit must be returned to Dinan for verification of the defect before any reimbursements will be issued. A reasonable period of time must be allowed for warranty replacement, shipping and/or repairs to be completed after the product is received by an Authorized Dinan Dealer or Dinan’s facility.

Thanks for being a good sport. Just a heads up the Dinantronics Sport warranty does not apply. The Dinantronics Sport is a specific plug and play tune and is not the same thing as the OP's Dinantronics Stage 2 tune. Not only is there about a $2,000 difference in price but they have two completely different warranties.

So based off my experience with my local dealership (which does not have any affiliation with Dinan) they gave me hassle whenever I tried to get the infamous limp mode issue resolved through the CPO warranty saying they can't service it because they would have to reprogram the DME to fix the limp mode so I had to pay the diagnostic fee, take the car home unplug the Dinan and take it back the following day and pay the deductible for the repair. Ever since I've played it safe and unplugged the Dinantronics before taking it into my local dealership lol.

So I got my car back today and it turns out the issue was the Valve Cover gasket as well as the oil pan gasket. CPO warranty covered both so I'm definitely glad. But as I mentioned having the valve cover gasket and now oil pan gasket at 60k miles, does that sound normal?
