Hello Serie 3 bimmers,

A new iDrive interface is now available for 2016 X3, X4, Série 1, Serie 2 :


How could we get it in our 2015, 2016 cars ? Could it be possible also in F30 ?



- Update the software with the USB key by using a 2017 VIN ?

- Update the NBT firmware with Esys and E-net cable ?

.... ?

I don't know anyone knows enough about the new update to confirm if it's backwards compatible with MY14 - MY16. My guess is that it won't be.

When the prior update to iDrive ('NBT') came out on the MY14 3 series, it wasn't backwards compatible with MY12 - MY13 3 series.

If there is a new controller, then most likely it is not backward compatible.

im almost 99% sure upgrading the iDrive software is NOT possible.

when BMW switching from CCC to CIC, and CIC to NBT....upgrading just the software was NOT possible. it required hardware changes as well. I dont see how this would be any different.

So, I guess dig through realoem.com and research parts numbers and compare?
This would show different hardware.

Isn't there new internals in the 2016 3 series LCI? I could be wrong but also would not be surprised if the hardware was ready for my2016 and the SW wasn't.

Hopefully I can upgrade the new SW. If not no biggie

from the look and existing description it sounds like it uses existing hardware, at least the NBT hardware. the controller just has the buttons remapped to new functions. So in theory there could be a software version that gives NBT a similar functionality but doesnt mess with the existing buttons. all would depend on whther the existing NBT becker computers can handle the software without being too laggy.

sub'd... for my2016 f30 lci, i think will be able to update for idrive 5.0. my2016 and my2017 using same NBT EVO unit.

I just don't see BMW allowing upgrades for a few reasons:

- Button names from older iDrive don't map perfectly to the new iDrive names.
- Lesser incentive for people to upgrade to a newer vehicle

But the difference ist that in this case still NBT Evo is used. So for F30 from 7/2015 on, which use NBT Evo, the update could be not impossible, but we will see...

How have we confirmed the 2016 and 2017 3 series use the same iDrive?
